Accidents in Writing · 12:09pm Feb 11th, 2022
So I've stated in the past that I'm a "seat of the pants writer" which means I plan very little and just type what comes to me at the time of writing. I have major plot points to aim for but no real idea for how to get there, and that's problematic at times. When you have this style of writing you sometimes come to an impasse where you've backed yourself into a corner and can either A: Ignore the problem and hope it goes unnoticed, B: Revise the story so that you may continue, or C: Cancel the story if it's really bad. I hate these options, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Or so I thought. Accidents happen. Sometimes they're bad and sometimes they turn out really freaking amazing! I've been hitting a wall as of late about how to explain something in my story Easy Access in order to continue the story. I spent a day rereading every chapter multiple times and then spent the night thinking about the stories pathing and realized something. Graphite in the story is extremely powerful for a unicorn which has really never been explained, and I don't want to just say "He just got lucky". I had accidentally backed myself into a wall while also creating a secondary accidental, yet perfect, way out. The point I'm trying to make is, sometimes in writing things don't line up well but it's not the end of the world! Please don't abandon your story or take any other drastic actions just because you can't figure out what to do. Give it time and consider all details before make a decision, hell even try explaining the situation out loud! Sometimes hearing you stories aloud can change your perspective, especially if you can have someone else read it to you. I regrettably don't have anyone I can talk with about these sort of things, but reading it aloud helped me find the flow the story is taking. Don't give up, I didn't and I stumbled upon an idea that really pulled everything together for me. I'm sure my idea is nothing spectacular but the fact I accidentally wrote the story to lead up to it? Feels pretty dang good to me. Anyways yeah I REALLY need to get some sleep for work, so uh yeah sorry for the tired ramblings! Peace fellow pones! {T}
These sorts of accidental setup in the source material are the basis of an entire genre of fanfic often derogatorily referred to as "headcanon dumps".
