Minorly-scratched replacement windshield... is another really necessary? · 4:41am Nov 25th, 2021

Hey, everyone.

So, I got my windshield replaced in my car. However, my father decided to be nosy and inspect it down to the absolute finest details, finding a few superficial scratches. This apparently angered him, and he demanded that I call the auto glass company and get a replacement. The scratches are really shallow, and you have to look really hard to see them, but my father was firm in his stance that I should get another new windshield. He claims "You should never accept anything of inferior quality! This job they did is unacceptable!" and "Imagine buying a house that's falling apart, or a car that's running bad; it's the same thing as this!"

I tried to reason with him that I felt it wasn't necessary to get a second replacement, and that some acrylic polish would work just fine, but my father insisted "There's nothing that can get scratches out of glass!" My dad, well... he always shuts me down, undermines my vocal beliefs and opinions, and never listens to me unless I agree with him. With that, he demanded that I call back to the auto glass company, and now I have a replacement schedule coming up again. I'm assuming it won't cost anything extra, but I don't really feel the need to get people out to our place again, when other people might actually need repairs and my insistent father is just delaying it to them.

I don't see why this needs to be done. The scratches are almost impossible to see! Surely a bit of acrylic polish could fix it. Why would I need a second windshield? It's just a waste of glass and creating unnecessary work. Sorry if I come off as ranty again, but I just get frustrated when I feel like I'm not being listened to. My father has a bit of a Napoleon complex, sort of a "my-way-or-the-highway" mentality. I would also like to point out that it's MY car; his name is nowhere on the title.

So... does anyone agree with me on this? Is it overkill to replace an entire, new windshield a second time just over a few superficial scuffs? To me, it's like demanding replacement firewood just because one log is too short. Is my father being irrational?

I think that you should get it replaced, because whatever you buy should be perfectly fine. I'm not forcing you, though.

No offense but your father Sounds similar to ed here.

As for your question, hard to Say, a small falling stone in the windshield can led to cracking at the slightest bump, so...better safe than sorry

Yeah, I can get where you're coming from. I guess I just dislike being wasteful.

Yeah, my father does have a few narcissistic tendencies, but not anywhere close to Ed. And I guess, technically he's my stepfather, since I was adopted at birth, but he's always been the only father I've ever known; I suppose genetic differences could play a role in our differing personas as well. With Ed, self-absorption is definitely his only characteristic amplified to 11.

That could be. The scratches don't even penetrate the top layer completely, and I imagine acrylic polish could easily fill them. I don't know, I guess, with the direction the world is heading in terms of using up our resources and letting too many bygones be bygones, I just hate seeing things go to waste when they could still potentially have some use.
