Story Notes: We Built This City · 12:26am Oct 26th, 2021

Frisco’s an engineer. She sees things differently than other ponies (and humans). And that tactless, matter-of-fact way of looking at things make others think she’s cold, distant, and haughty. But she really isn’t. Empathy just isn’t her strong suit. Frisco’s not exactly the life of the parties she’s never even been invited to.

She’s a G3 pony designed exclusively for Pony Fair 2006 (held in San Francisco). Her cutie mark is the Golden Gate bridge, though for the purposes of this story, it’s Equestria’s equivalent in San Franciscolt.

Denim Blue is also a G3 pony. Her bio indicates she set up the first recycling center in town.

For those reading 16, we've seen these two ponies before in Ploomette's third chapter. This story was written first, and has been sitting unpublished for nearly two years. As often happens with my writing, incomplete stories will serve as inspiration for something else. In this case, I had an engineer and her assistant already fleshed out and ready to go when 16 needed similar characters. Now, their story finally gets to see the light of day.

We Built This City is a #1 hit from Starship, way back in 1985. The bridge of the song includes a radio traffic report (at the time, local stations were encouraged to make their own; I would absolutely love to get the George Washington Bridge version from the New York metro area). The standard version is... wait for it... the Golden Gate Bridge. This is the version you'll hear on the radio. The song fits Frisco to a tee: building cities, San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge... what more could she want?

As for the 1979 Lincoln Continental, it's been described as 'an air-conditioned living room you can drive' and that's pretty accurate. You won't feel potholes in this land yacht, the suspension will make sure of that.

Ah, Jefferson Starship. Formerly Jefferson Airplane. Even the band had to grow.

And thanks for the additional information. :)

In that last picture, are the two transparent sections for the turn signals, while the headlights are behind those things that look like doors?

Correct! Hidden headlights were popular from the late '60s through the '70s and '80s. These days hidden headlights are out of vogue for a number of reasons: they're more expensive, lighting technology has come a long way (with LEDs you don't need massive headlights anymore), and there are regulations in the European Union against things protruding from a car (basically legislating pop-up headlights out of existence after 2004) as a pedestrian safety measure.
