Maya and the Three (no spoilers) · 2:57am Oct 25th, 2021
So, after one heck of a week I treated myself to watching this new series on Netflix by the same dude that brought us "The Book of the Dead." Spoiler free, if you liked that one, this is definitely for you.
Needless to say, the amount of detail that went into the animation of this series is amazing. This was done with love to the myths and legends of Mexico... it's really not something you could use as a reliable reference of who's who in the Aztec and Meso-American pantheons, but there are some familiar-ish references for those that know the gods and stories of Tenochtitlan.
Although Pascoite hasn't seen it yet (get to it, man!) he brought up briefly in a conversation how it looked like a similar setup to Onyx Equinox (but good). And yes. It's definitely MUCH less pretentious, I think. There is a real embracing of the ancient cultures of Mexico, and although it is very diluted into a world that is kid friendly unlike... well, life back then... it is very clearly a fantasy built on the bricks of those myths, lovingly adapted into its own world, its own rules and rich, growing, world.
Touching back on Onyx Equinox, the thing I didn't like from the beginning and never happened here is that for Equinox, I immediately felt that it was trying to be something else instead of its own thing. Although it wasn't exactly it, just looking at the trailers and then the series I got a sense that they were just trying to be Avatar, but edgy. And with Aztecs. Which, you know. No. While there is definitely more to it than that, this series in contrast immersed itself into its own self. It has a very distinct feel, and it shows.
It doesn't have wild, unexpected themes lurking deep under the surface for watchers to discover. It's intended to be kid friendly, but it has a simple, good message, and characters that you can grow to like. There's even some unexpected things, so don't assume it's just a run of the mill story with impressive visuals.
I'd recommend anyone to give it a chance. I'm certainly watching it again when I can.
This is definitely on my list to watch.
I'll probably check it out once I finish Inside Job (great show btw).
Yeah, Equinox had promise, but I felt it wasn;t trying enough to be its own thing. Many say Dragon Prince is a spiritual sucessor to Avatar is true, and from what I've seen it is, but moreso in being well written. Was Equinox really THAT pretentious?
I ended up watching it this weekend and really enjoyed it as well. I didn't know it was from "Book of Life" devs, but that totally explains why I saw familiar Book of Life character designs during one particular flashback image.
I was lucky enough to see Book of Life in theatres and am very excited for this series. Glad you think so highly of it, it definitely encourages me to check it out. :)
Started watching last night, and my roommate was so hooked they binged the whole series after I went to bed. It looks SERIOUSLY good!
Definitely on my watch list I loved el tigree so this looks fun.
