    Already on Step 4

Check this out if you have zero clue what I'm talking about haha.

Did bodyweight squats in front of my physical therapist, and they were good!! Super smooth, great range of motion, and zero tightness for the first few sets. This puts me on step 4 out of 5.

Plan to Cross the Finish Line

Gameplan my physical therapist and I made to overcome my joint issues once and for all. I'd say I'm 90% there, so here is the plan for the last 10%. Primary remaining issue is the left hip weakness causing me to shift much of my weight onto the right hip, which also causes my entire trunk/upper body to twist to compensate for the lean. This messes up my shoulder blade movement as well, leading to

Can Almost See the Light at the End of the Tunnel

After almost a full decade of pain affecting my waking hours, sleep, ability to exercise, and ability to just have fun, I'm almost done!!!!

I define me being done as: Being able to exercise, sleep, stand, sit, lie down, and walk with no pain, instability, or unevenness. It's hard to put a number on a goal like this, but I'd say I'm 85% there.

    Almost Done Beating Genetics

Ughhhhhh why can't I be 100% done, though :raritydespair:

Alright, so despite basically every joint having issues at first, I can minimize the major starting issues to:
    - Right hip tear + instability
    - Left hip tear + instability
    - Left shoulder instability
    - Right shoulder instability

The two bolded ones were the biggest issues. As of now, I have:

Yay, Haven't Done Pull-Ups in Years and Can Now Do Them Again!! · 1:17am Oct 23rd, 2021

:yay:

Due to my shoulder instability, pull ups were something my body couldn't handle for 7+ years. Remember, last year I had to start my back exercises with a 3lbs dumbbell :rainbowlaugh:

Anyway, after my training session today (which fried my back and arms), I tried pull ups for the first time in forever and flew up on each rep! And remember, I'm at 220lbs right now.

Felt happy and wanted to post :twilightsheepish: I don't have a pull up bar at home, but once I get one, getting up to 300lbs pull ups (bodyweight + added weight) is the obvious next goal.

Also, due to my posture improving from PT, I've apparently gained an inch according to everyone around me. I have now entered the 6'3 master race haha.

Me and Griff vs you and someone else in dodgeball.

Make your pick wisely.

Fine, you get three people on your team, so two picks.

Result of the game will be the same either way :trollestia:

Dude, just the fact that you're doing something is impressive considering your age and generation haha. And in case you think this is flattery, you should know that I'd also call you out if you suddenly posted you were never gonna exercise again. So take the compliments as genuine.

Now I’m thinking about starting to lift again but I haven’t weighed myself yet and I don’t know exactly where to start.

Is there a park nearby with a pull up bar or anything you can do pull ups on? Honestly, just getting good at bodyweight exercises is an amazing first step. Like having the goal to do 100 push ups in 15 minutes, 50 pull ups in 15 minutes, 100 squats in 10 minutes, and being able to run a mile easily with decent speed. It's a lot safer than starting with a gym barbell. And bodyweight stuff tends to be very easy to recover from + it builds coordination that you can use for the gym and sports.

I couldn't start with bodyweight due to my joint issues, but I'm (unfortunantly) a very rare case. If you hit those numbers I wrote above, you'd be in the top 5% of biological men (since you identity as male). How strong are you currently with push ups, pull ups and bodyweight squats?

(I’m obsessed with comparing literally everything to velocity, so here’s my chance to plug in that I’ve been doing well in school also- gimme your approval now)

Good grades = one step closer to finances, so good job haha. You taking physics already?

What I’m questioning now is what goal I should set for myself regarding my upper and lower body strength.

Honestly, the numbers I gave you should be a good goal. The squat goal will come easiest, so if you want, you can change it to 100 squats while holding a dumbbell in 10 minutes. Pick a dumbbell that's around a quarter to a third of your bodyweight and just hold it like this:

global-uploads.webflow.com/5d1d0d3f53ced35a29dbe169/5fbc1c1889a1d8fc84f5808b_dumbbell-goblet-squat.png

My best with push ups is maybe ten without stopping

Tip for this: Instead of doing 10 in a row and burning yourself out at the start, do like 25 - 30 sets of one. This way, you get more practice + are doing more overall. When that becomes easy, turn the 30 sets of 1 into 15 sets of 2 and so on. And once 30 total is easy, increase the total number to 50.

Nearly every guy does this instinctively for push ups and pull ups and it always works. From my own experience before my joint issues, this is the fastest way to go from a couple of push-ups in a row to doing like 30 - 50 push ups in a row. And obviously it works with pull ups too.

Wait... you're... 6'3?! :pinkiegasp:
