So, after far too long, I have finally managed to get myself writing again, and have just posted what I have been working on to my Patreon (meaning it will get posted here in a week, if you would rather wait). Now, as the title of this suggests, this is not, unfortunately, the next chapter of A Somber Tale, but rather the prologue of a new story. Hopefully, it will be enough to tide people over, and at the very least prove that I'm not dead, lol.
As a teaser, here is the summary.
Umbral
A queen will do a lot for her subjects, even give up her own child if it meant giving them a better life, despite the obvious pain that causes for the children in question.
That is a pain Twilight Sparkle never felt, as she grew up never knowing that her loving family had adopted her. And while those connections remain, as secrets become revealed, Twilight cannot help but wonder about what never was, as she attempts to reconnect with a family she never knew she had. Even if that means admitting that she, herself, is a monster.
It sounds wonderful already! Can't wait! At the same time I do hope you continue u'r other stories. Mainly 'A Somber Tale', 'Five Shades of Twilight', 'A Twist of Fate', and 'The Best Laid Plans of Shrews and Stallions'.

Can I give you a few suggestions then? I have over a hundred thoughts! eh if only I had a drawing device ( I don't have one) I am a HUGE Twibra fan! I would draw many to many things. I was even thinking to draw a few scenes from your most flawless fic 'A Somber Tale'. A few of my most favorite scenes like when Twi and Sombra were cuddling in 'Dark Delights', or Sombra vs Midnight from 'On a Wing and Prayer', oh oh I know! Maybe also when Sombra first hugged her in 'Midnight hours'! Aaahh if only I could draw again!!

When you can draw, then, by all means, go ahead! I have no artistic talent, (all of my creative ability went into writing,) so I would love to see depictions of various scenes in the story!

Of course! I love drawing! And once I can draw again I assure you I WILL draw scenes from your exquisite masterpiece you've written. And I'll also be drawing fanart for another Twibra fic I believe you are familiar with. The wonderful 'The Fairy Tale Fiasco'! I absolutely adore that story! I've reread it countless times and I still never get bored of it! As well as your amazing story too of course!

There are many twi is a chnagling stories and many twi uses dark magic stories, but I have never before seen a twi is an umbra story.
I do have a question thought, do the umbra still feed on negative emotion, because I believe that is why they were imprisoned in the first place, they tortured ponies for their negative emotions in the comic. If so, how has twilight been able to nourish herself as she hasn't been tourturing any slaves. Thought its possible high level umbra don't die if they don't feed, just grow weaker, which seems to be the case for changeling like Chrysalis. If so that means twilight has been using magics her entire life while starved. Sombra went from being a medium level unicorn to a being able to match celestia after embracing his umbra heritage after all. Now that I think about it twilight has the potential to dwarf even sombra in power due to her status as heir of the umbra and element of magic.

Remember how Twilight got her cutie mark? It was while having judgement and disdain directed at her, coupled with the shock of the Rainboom. For the purpose of this story, that was a glimpse of her true potential if she did feed like an Umbrum.
WOW, so twilight could easily surpass the likes of celestia when it comes to sheer power, thought she would most likely refuse to feed like an umbrum for most of the story, but if she did she would be a much bigger threat than sombra due to her sheer power. I PITY any enemy of equetrsia that manages to hurt one of twilights friends/ family because that is one of the few things that might force twilight to embrace her dark powers. Your explanation also solves one of mlp's biggest potholes(Twilights power level fluctuates wildly).
