Uncommon Head Cannon · 6:19am Mar 2nd, 2021

Here are some bits of relatively uncommon head canon that were reinforced in my mind while cleaning out my Read It Later and Tracing Unread lists.

I am sure a number of these were inspired by stories I read. If you recognize any of them, please leave a comment below so I can credit the author!

A number of this batch are related to things that led up to or happened after Twilight took over ruling Equestria.

Future Twilight has started multiple “friendship groups” that she interacts with on a regular basis while she rules Equestria.

  • One group includes her old SGU classmates like Minuette and Moon Dancer. They do all kinds of activities around Canderlot.
  • Another group includes Fancy Pants, Fleur, and other “nice” elites. They do a lot of charitable work.
  • Another includes ex-students from the School of Friendship and from the School for Gifted Unicorns. These are more mentoring meetings.
  • Twilight actively looks for ways to connect with new groups, especially with non-ponies as they become more common in her new cosmopolitan Equestria.

Celestia actually kept the brakes on pony technological advancements during Luna’s thousand year banishment.

  • Celestia slowed the pace of change so that Luna would be more comfortable in Equestria when she returned.
  • Because she was very conservative about changes for so long, Celestia knew she was not the ruler that could effectively lead Equestria while it was undergoing rapid transformations.
  • This was one of the reasons why Celestia and Luna retired, so that Twilight could lead Equestria through the coming changes.
  • Twilight’s EqG experiences with different societies and technologies were one of the things that convinced Celestia that Twilight was ready for the job.

Luna continued to monitor the Dreamscape even after she retired as a Princess.

  • Luna has a secret corp of “Dream Wardens” who help her monitor low level issues in the Dreamscape.
  • Derpy was a Dream Warden and Luna was training Pip to become one as well.
  • Rainbow Dash becomes a Dream Warden after Luna retires from rulership and rose to be Luna’s second in command.

Tree Hugger taught Fluttershy both meditation and an Aikido-like martial art.

  • The first moves Tree Hugger taught Fluttershy were flowing dodges that took advantage of FS's natural grace.
  • As Fluttershy gained confidence Tree Hugger taught her flowing blocks.
  • Later on, Tree Hugger taught Fluttershy throws and joint locks.

When Twilight first came to Ponyville she was actively studying for an advanced degree in magic.

  • Twilight ended up specializing in the magic of friendship, with a minor in ancient magic.
  • Twilight actually earned her degree with honors by the end of season 2, which was why she wasn’t as focused on studying later in the show.
  • Twilight was very proud of her dissertation, though the original copy was in the Golden Oaks Library and destroyed by Tirek.
  • The Friendship Journal in the episode “Fame and Misfortune” was a popular version of Twilight’s dissertation, minus all the magical math.

Twilight and Starlight made magic sparring sessions a regular part of their “lessons”.

  • The magic “duel” at the beginning of ”Every Little Thing She Does” seemed like a regular part of Twilight and Starlight’s lessons.
  • Starlight was a full time student during this time and she would use the extra study time to learn spells that would let her “stretch” her abilities and show off while sparing.
  • Though Twilight couldn’t spend as much time studying magic because of her “Princess Duties”, she used the fact that Starlight would “stretch” to keep advancing her own magic skills.
  • If someone else were to try to use Starlight’s spells against her, Twilight would have already discovered a counter.

Twilight was changed when she acted as a focus for the triple blast of Harmony magic that defeated Tirek, Chrysalis, and Cozy in “The Ending of the End, Part 2”.

  • It triggered the growth that ultimately led her to be Celestia-sized in “The Last Problem” and allowed her to control the Sun and Moon without needing the “Cosmic Watch”.

When I want future Twilight to be OP, I assume she has personal access to rainbow Harmony magic by channeling her friendship with all the citizens of Equestria.

  • If the citizens were to disavow Twilight’s leadership she would lose personal access to the Harmony magic.

When I want future Cadence to be OP, I assume she has bonded with the Crystal Heart like Twilight has with Harmony magic.

  • This has caused Cadence to grow to Celestia-sized, become permanently crystalline, and allows her to channel the power of love from beings across Equestria.

What are some of your bits of head canon that might not be commonly accepted? What kinds of stories can come out of those bits of head canon?

Impossible, the only PhD in Equestria is Maud Pie.

I wonder if Maude’s ‘Rocktorate’ uses the initials PhD?

I have a head canon that’s been kickin around in my head for a while now, so i’m gonna try to put it into words. It’s probable that someone has already thought of this, but I think it’s an interesting theory.

Twilight believing in the legend of Nightmare Moon directly led to her release.

I don’t really have any evidence for this, and i’m desperately fleshing it out in my head as I go along, but it’s something I’ve thought about for a while. Specifically, I like thinking about the many different meanings of “the stars shall aid in her escape”. I’m not quite sure which explanation for NMM the show landed on, but I’m going with “The result of negative feelings and dark magic”. Anyway, Luna is connected to the dream realm, and by extension, ponies minds. NMM probably is too, since it’s just Luna but really crazy and corrupted. So, my thinking is, if someone were to, say, specifically dream about Nightmare Moon herself being released from her prison, it might be all that is needed for said disaster to come true.

Obviously, there are a couple problems with this theory. Chief among them being that there would have been ponies dreaming about her back in the years following her banishment. I don’t have a defense for that other than NMM lacking the power to escape so soon, or the Elements providing some sort of seal that eventually faded. Overall, the theory doesn’t hold up especially well under scrutiny, and it’s almost certainly been thought of already, but I like looking for weird obscure meanings in things dangit!

I just stick all my headcanons in stories so I don’t lose them!
