On Writing "Where She Wants To Go" · 10:59pm Nov 28th, 2020
Well it took eleven months, but I finally managed to write a self-contained story on each of the members of the Young Six, and even a story that featured all six of them at once! It's a shame that this most recent story, focusing on Silverstream's past, didn't grab as much attention as I hoped, but unlike Yona's backstory, I was under much less stress and pressure to get it done, so there wasn't a hard blow to see it drop off as quickly (it even got featured for a short while).
The main thing I wanted to focus on in this story was the time between the end of the movie and the School of Friendship, as well as bring up the events preceeding the movie when Mount Aris was invaded. I noticed in both the movie and the main show, it's never made clear when exactly did the Storm King take over Mount Aris and the Hippogriffs were forced to hide in the ocean as Seaponies. Whenever Silverstream brought it up in the show, she gives the impression that it took place a very long time ago (she even says she was a seapony for most of her life). As such, my headcanon is that it took place before she was born, but after Skystar was born since she had some experience with being a hippogriff in the movie.
As a result, Silverstream's experience with being a hippogriff is very new to her, which would explain why she finds such mundane things like stairs and plumbing incredibly excited (even Seaspray seemed to be fascinated by stairs, so the long time away from the surface had effects on every hippogriff). Furthermore, with being free from the Storm King rather new at this point of time, I'd imagine not every Seapony is confident in how safe it is up there, some of them would have to be initially cautious and protective.
I did struggle a bit with the title of the story, my first draft had the title Silverstream Sneaks Out, but I felt that gave the impression that Silverstream would be the central focus on the story, when it's actually her mother Ocean Flow. I'm not sure if that had an effect on people's first impressions, but who knows?
As for what to write about next, I've been having some thought and I'm now thinking more about writing that Gallus in the Royal Guard Academy story that I mentioned a while back, it'll be ambitious as hell but I feel like I should at least try it out. Just one thing I'm not sure about is should I include him applying to the academy, or should the story only focus on his time in the royal guard academy? Or should I I do a story about him applying to the academy and him training at the academy as two separate stories?
