Melody's Theories 1: Gallus' Coloring · 5:13pm Oct 10th, 2020

Hello! So I've been wanting to do this for a while and since today (10/10) is MLP's birthday (happy birthday MLP!) I figured it was time. So welcome to Melody's Theories! Today, to commemorate that today is also Mental Health Day, I will be talking about a theory involving Mr Mental Health Break himself, Gallus.

More specifically, what kind of bird Gallus is.

Now, we have seen many types of griffons; each have the same cat-like hindquarters but very different bird-halves. Gilda is an Eagle, Gruff is a Vulture, Gabby seems to be an Osprey, Gustave a Pelican. There was even a background griffon that was an Owl. But not all of these birds have been seen in Equestria outside of the griffons themselves.

Because of this fact, it’s not much of a surprise to say we haven’t seen another griffon like Gallus, or even a bird that has his coloring. The staff stated that they added the color because the directors wanted a design that was more eye-catching. However, as for an in-show excuse, I think I have a solution.

No, Gallus is not a chicken. Even despite the fact that his name, Gallus, is actually the scientific name of a chicken, Gallus-Gallus Domesticus. I think the reason they named him Gallus-besides the opportunity for that joke-is that the name Gallus is also a way to say someone who is brave, bold, and a little reckless.

Anyway, Gallus isn't a chicken. I actually think that Gallus is a Parrotlet-griffon. My reasoning? Parrotlet males have the following qualities:

  • Eyebrow-like feathers above eyes
  • Darker shaded feathers on wings
  • Curved, strong, thick beak
  • Can become aggressive when left alone too long

Gallus himself has many of these attributes, including the main color scheme we can expect from this kind of bird. It also explains his claustrophobia. I bet that if his friends were with him during What Lies Beneath he would've been much less scared than he was when he was alone and trapped. If he’s not a Parrotlet, then I think he is most likely a Budgie.

As for why we never see any other griffons like him, it could be the opposite of what things are like in our world. While Parrotlets and Budgies are common birds on Earth, in Equestria, it may be rare to see them, and even rarer to see a griffon of their kind. Maybe Gallus is a rare griffon, it could explain why Gruff picked him to go to Twilight's School. Who knows, the griffons may have even considered his coloring a disgrace, not recognizing him as rare, and Gruff picked him to go to the school for that reason.

And that's my theory! I hope you enjoyed it, comment below and let me know if you want to see more of these.

Ooh, I like it

I think he’s based on the peregrine falcon.

Just take a look at this image. nwf.org/-/media/NEW-WEBSITE/Shared-Folder/Wildlife/Birds/bird_peregrine-falcon_600x300.ashx

They have a similar beak structure as well as similar colors. Of course his colors are cartoon shades but match the look. Only real difference is the head cress.

True, but the Perigeine Falcon's coloring is more similar to Gabby's coloring

There is no doubt Gabby a Peregrine her popularity might be why they are similar.

This is a good theory nice work you gave points and explain your thoughts. I approve.

I do agree the head cress throws off my theory, then again Gilda has stylish feathers on her head and she clearly based on the bald eagle.

Well, Gabby's more of an Osprey, the Mark's on her eyes show that

We could also be over thinking things. The artist might have taken inspiration from multiple types of birds.

Hmm very interesting theory about that I mean like his design

Heh, glad you enjoyed
