My Little Metro and Big Ideas · 9:05pm Nov 25th, 2012

My magnum opus. My crowning jewel. The longest story I've ever written, in any place ever. And it's only about halfway done, given how freaking long I'm making the chapters. I think 25,000 words every couple of months is a good pace. I also recently noticed it broke 20,000 views, which made me smile. I think that means I'm sort of "established" by now. I hope it does, I've been plugging away with my stories long enough.

Do people realize that in these epic pony stories, they're literally reading about two novels' worth of words like, every four or five updates?

How does that even happen? It's mind-boggling and amazing to me, to think an average novel is supposed to be around 80,000 words or it won't sell, and I've written over twice that with Metro alone. Every chapter is the size of a short story, every few weeks I churn out enough words to make a novel. And that's not even PART of the whole story.

And so many other authors in the fandom do that at a literally explosive pace that blows mine out of the water. War and Peace? Fiddy Shades of Crap? Harry Potter? They have nothing on single authors in the fandom, let alone whole groups of us. And a lot of it is good.

The sheer amount of stuff that we are inspired to create, the mind-blowing amount of ideas I see come out of this fandom... about ponies! My little ponies! This isn't a huge, "adult" or long established canon like Star Wars, Star Trek, or Lord of the Rings, which all have giant worlds with lots of lore behind them! It's a slice of life cartoon about a bunch of perky pastel equines! They have a theme song about the MAGIC OF FRIENDSHIP for crying out loud!

How can people look at this and NOT say it's one of the most surprising things to happen in the last few years? And two years on, we're still churning out incredible, talented stuff.

Sure, you can say a good majority of it is stupid and would never make it in a regular market. But we're kind of our own market, aren't we? It works because we make it work.

I think bronies have something to be proud of, and I hope they all realize just how incredible something like this fandom really is and never let go of what it can mean for people at large. What I think we can all draw from bronies is this... with enough effort, with enough imagination, almost anything can become totally awesome, and it is okay to like something that is created with such devotion and high quality.

Except farts. There are limits, guys, and I think farts is one of them.

Obviously you have not seen someone fart on a lighter... that is totally awesome.

Amen to that.

Does this mean I should cancel my fart fic? :(

Hey, look at FO:E. That was big enough to spaw its own fandom.

Shame there isn't any Metro fanart, it most certainly deserves it.

FO:E is a fandom within a fandom! Hard to believe it's been two years already, seems like so long ago I watched the first episode on YouTube. This fandom blows my mind every day and always makes me smile. The community is always bursting with great ideas and plenty of untapped potential. Like pax said though, I wish Metro had some fanart. I love the characters and I'd like to see what others would envision the world of My Little Metro to be.
