Second story idea outlined, and thoughts on feature creep · 2:47am Aug 20th, 2020

Hey all,

I did a quick bullet point outline of the story I want to write next. Although I'm going to leave the summary a surprise until I upload it, I wanted to share some thoughts I had when coming up with it.

Firstly, I want to write a story focusing on adult Flurry Heart. I have an idea for how she is like when she's 18-19 years old that derivatives from what I believe to be is the most common interpretation of her older self. I don't know how well I'll be able to explore it in this story, but I'm going to allude to my ideas and see what I come up with.

Secondly, I want to write a much shorter story. While Cold Return was super fun to write, I kept getting ideas while writing it that I felt like I HAD to include. I'm still really happy with how it turned out, but it definitely grew as my inspiration kept striking. For this new story, I'm challenging myself to express everything I want to say within two major scenes. I already know what they are thankfully, and how I want them to go generally.

Lastly, feature creep. How it relates to my writing is thus: I need to make sure I focus on the "core" of what I want to say, lest it fly way out of control. I've noticed that as I write, I keep coming up with new ideas for details and new ways to express the actions going on, or even whole new scenes to write. It's something that I think can easily spiral out of control. While it's awesome to have a story with a ton of details and content, in the end the following is the most important: A finished story is worth infinitely more than a richly detailed unfinished story. A finished story is something others can read, and I put a lot of value into that.

So yeah, just wanted to share! I'd like to finish this story within a month at the latest.
