A lesson in thinking your stories through, and why not to announce them too early. · 7:15pm Aug 27th, 2020
Hello all,
I'm going to put the story I talked about in my last blog on the backburner. I've spent many hours looking at my incomplete work trying to figure out what I was going to say, but nothing came to mind.
My initial idea was: Teenage tomboy Flurry Heart has everything going for her, but worries about her future as a princess and how she could protect the Crystal Empire, considering the ways it had been taken over in the past. Not a bad idea I think, but I ran into some core problems:
- I didn't know why she would worry, given her apparent strength.
- I couldn't picture in my head what a conversation between her and her dad (Shining Armor) would look like.
- The idea was a lot of headcanon bits I tried to squish together, without a core plot to connect them.
- I neither found my interpretations of the characters interesting enough to pull good story material out of, nor could I figure out an interesting situation to put them in.
I will save the headcanon ideas I had for later usage, but as a story itself I think it's a dud.
Oh well, win some lose some.
Here's the summary I came up with, since it's unlikely I will release the story itself:
Flurry Heart has grown from a rambunctious but powerful foal, into a thoughtful (but still powerful) young mare. Physically strong, smart, and learning the ways of a politician, she should feel like there's nothing but a bright future for her.
Yet, she has some serious worries. What could worry a mare as powerful as her?
Maybe a pizza dinner with dad will yield some answers.
Dunno when my next story will go up, but I'm not worried. I got a few things I want to write (some not pony related), but of course anything pony related will be posted here!
Huh. Just saw this blog post. Well some stories will get dropped - especially if you can't capture the character's voices. Have fun writing!
