NGO Armed Forces Abducting US Citizens · 11:33am Jul 27th, 2020

Why am I just NOW hearing about this!?! And why isn't it being blasted across every news network in the country?!:twilightangry2:

And the scary thing is, I'm not even surprised at this point.:ajsleepy:

Does them being contractors really matter? More concerned with what they're doing than who they are. Private contractors did not surprise me either. I think private profit with public costs is a common element in fascist governments.

It really does because they are subject to a LOT less oversight and restrictions. Because they're a private entity rather than government, there are a whole pile of privacy laws they can hide behind. It is also step number one in creating plausible deniability in military operations.

Those are things I'd worry about before they start kidnapping people off the street and after they withdraw from cities. Not arguing it shouldn't be on the list of priorities. Just not at the top right now. Privatization is a threat also with [charter] schools, prisons, the military. It's not my biggest concern for schools right now because the threat of sending children back to classes to die is a bit more pressing. Charters aren't going anywhere while Betsy DeVos is in charge, but local action can keep local schools shuttered in fall.

What I'm concerned about is the distinct lack of accountability and excess of plausible deniability. Keep in mind that the mercenaries involved are a direct descendant (same organization, same people, different name) of Blackwater. Yes, that Blackwater.

Now we have confirmed reports of far-right white supremacists inciting rioting at BLM protests. Yeah, we all knew it was happening before, but to have it publicly confirmed is nice. The far-right is TRYING to start a civil war and they're not even being subtle about it. At this rate I'm worried that iisaw might actually be right when he says November is going to devolve into violence.

Absolutely it will devolve into violence. That's the whole point of this exercise. They want cover for suspending or interfering with the elections. They want military support. The military pushed back a bit on providing support in June, so these contractors provide an alternative, and their instigation of violence will heighten tension, get more people on the street, and build a case for either stronger involvement of the military against civil unrest (consider what happened in Turkey, where Trump's best bud Erdogan made mass arrests and banned people from civic duty after a failed uprising) or for increased reliance on these paramilitaries. Even without direct military involvement, they'll want to build a case with the civil unrest to prevent the military from interfering in whatever election shenanigans they execute.

Speaking of election postponement, Bolivia is postponing their elections a second time due to COVID-19.
