What's this? A techblog? · 7:52am May 27th, 2020
Holy crap have these types of blogs become rare from me lately. Anyhow, y'know how I have that little tidbit on my user page on posting a blog from a late 90's-era computer?
I kinda maybe sorta bumped it up a notch. I'll prolly post a blog from that system sometime else, but short to say, I've built a system using a mix of period-correct hardware from the late 90's and early 2000's. What can it do?
- Browse the modern internet with no trouble aside from lag and not being able to play Youtube videos
- Do productivity stuff using office software (the main purpose of the build)
- Play full-motion video from VideoCDs (haven't tested DVDs yet though.)
- Play Minecraft at below 0 FPS
- Sit on top of the cardboard box that's serving as its case
Aight, I'ma go to bed now. G'night.
Yay, 90's era computers!
I'm replying from my FrankenThinkPad T440P, and the base computer there is late 2013, so not nearly as old.
I've replaced the display (for an hd one), keyboard (backlight), touchpad (with one from a T450P. Much better.), added an M.2 SSD, upgraded the hard drive, and stuck an extra hard drive in the empty dvd spot, and put in a better battery. I'm kinda really learning the hardware of this laptop...
I might have mentioned it before, but I did the keyboard, touchpad, and extra hard drive pretty recently. It now dual boots Linux/Windows 10. (I've been debating if I want to stick Mac OS X on instead of Windows to make it a Hackintosh. Don't think the wifi would work, though.)
