Is Princess Peach a bad role model? · 11:14am May 21st, 2020
I noticed in every Super Mario game that there's a repetitive plot where Bowser kidnaps Peach and Mario comes to save her. Peach couldn't even defend herself, all she does is yelling "Help!". It's an outdated trope found in old literature called "damsel in distress" and I feel like it sends a negative message to gameplayers that a woman's role is limited to being dependent on a man to rescue her. Does that make you not want to play Super Mario games anymore?
Mario makes more sense when you, according to Shigeru Miyamoto, imagine the characters as actors playing parts. Hence, Mario and Bowser can be mortal enemies in one game, and tennis partners in another.

Fair enough. It's mainly about the gameplay; the plot is superflous.
She's probably a terrible role model, but I don't think characters should be in general. It makes sense she'd be targeted for kidnap; making her such an airhead at times who doesn't do anything useful (Doesn't have to be fighting) that we can see is far more questionable.
That said, I do like her.

Speaking of airheads, Muriel from Courage the Cowardly Dog has the same trait as Peach. She's highly unaware of dangerous things happening around her and obviously ends up in trouble because of her ignorance and Courage always saves her.
I read a theory that Peach and Bowser are having an affair behind Mario's back, hence the constant kidnapping. What do you think?

Oh, to that theory of the affair, I don't think they have an affair, but I do think Bowser does want Peace, possibly just due to loneliness, also perhaps because of raising the koopalings. Bowser is a single father of eight, that alone is a pretty impressive feat on his part, plus he has to rule an entire kingdom of diverse creatures from walking mushrooms, to turtles who stand on two legs and can fly, to wizards on brooms to aquatic life, to sentient concrete blocks and living fire and magma dwelling monsters all while keeping the koopa troops working as a cohesive force. Think getting a society of diverse humans to run efficiently is hard, imagine how it would be when virtually the only thing in common you have with some others is the flag you live under.

With that aside, it has a good gameplay, but the repetitive plot and gender stereotypes are some of the issues pointed out by feminists. I happen to be a feminist and I also noticed these cliches in old Disney films and I'm no longer inclined to watch them because of that.

Second, I would not be one to wear that title without a bit of caution and being clear cut int what you believe. Feminist is a hard thing to pin down now as there are many beliefs within "feminists" that get splinter cells to lock horn with each other plenty of times.
Also, for the vast majority, I hold a lack of respect or in other cases utter loathing for 3rd wave feminists. I respect and commend just about all 1st and second wave feminists, my personal favorite 2nd waver is none other than Lauren Faust herself. That being said, Lauren very much disapproved of these modern feminists from the 3rd wave. She saw them as nothing more than whiny entitled brats who find anything to complain about even though it is not a problem, so much so that she made an episode of the PPGs with a villain meant to represent a 3rd waver, Fe Fatal, and the girls became a bunch of whiny brats who thought everything was a slight against their gender, and wouldn't shut up for five seconds to let someone else speak until Ms. Sara Bellum set them straight. Sara Bellum served under the mayor, working for a man, but she was always a powerful woman, she kicked butt on multiple occasions and showed just how strong she was, and she never goes around complaining about these trivial matters, because she is a real strong woman. A real strong woman never needs to complain about this stuff, because they don't care, because they have confidence.
Think about Katniss from Hunger Games. A bowman, a woman who kicks ass and radiates confidence and independence. If she heard one of these feminists complain about video games, she would drag them by the collar to District 12, throw them to the ground and tell them to survive by hunting raccoons for a week, then come back to her and see how much they want to complain about videogames.
If you don't want to play the games that's perfectly fine, just putting this as food for thought.
