    My First Convention

I'd been meaning to put this up earlier, but well, better late than never.

Tomorrow and through Sunday, I'll be out of town - my dad and I are going to a convention over in Beckley. Dad's going to be vending a table there to try and sell some books.

    Thoughts on Harakiri (1962)

Wow. This was a masterclass in buildup and tension. I knew about Masaki Kobayashi's movie before - a scathing indictment of the samurai and the honor code that they profess to live by - but all the same, watching the movie had me hooked from start to finish. :scootangel:

    Thoughts on Galaxy Quest

Finally getting around to writing up my thoughts on this one. I had heard plenty of good things about it from my parents, though I had yet to see it. Finally, we rung in the new year by watching "Galaxy Quest" with dinner.

I watched Godzilla x Kong yesterday

    And all in all?

It was fun. Good mindless monster mash of a film. Funny how much some of the stuff with Kong in the movie made me think, just a little, of Primal. If only for the lack of dialogue and the importance of character through action and expression.

Questions, Answered! · 8:07pm Mar 31st, 2020

I waited an extra day to see if anyone else would bite. But now, it is time for me to share the questions and answers from my Q&A!

FourShadow had quite a few questions for me:

1. What got you into the MLP fandom?
2. On the 50s monster flicks, what's your favorites? Like a couple, it doesn't have to be THE favorite.
3. Favorite video game?
4. Favorite action flick?
5. Oooh now here's a fun one. Worst DC movie you've seen?
6. Favorite TV show?
7. Annnnd favorite song?

1. I did a blog post about that a while back. But if I really had to sum up what made me check it out for real, or decide to stick around… I’d probably have to say just seeing that there was such a dedicated community around this show and the characters, that impressed me into checking it out and seeing both the original source material as well as the stories that other people told with those characters. Admittedly there’s always been dreck out there, but still, far more often than not, I’m happy I got into MLP.

2. Oh Lord, I got a couple. On the American side of things, I really love the original Creature from the Black Lagoon – it’s just a damned good movie that holds up really well. On a similar note I also really like 20 Million Miles to Earth, even if it’s a very sad story in a lot of ways. “It Came from Outer Space” is also really good and has a very refreshing twist on the old alien-invasion story, which is nice. On the foreign side of things, the original Godzilla (or Gojira if you’ve seen the original Japanese, as I have) and Rodan are excellent films. There’s plenty more I *haven’t* seen though, and would love to catch up on at some point!

3. Oh God, that’s a hard one. :rainbowlaugh: I have so many! I don’t know if I can pare it down to a number-one spot, but I can name some of my all-time favorites: the Batman Arkham games (in particular Asylum and City), Red Dead Redemption, the Sly Cooper games were a BIG part of my childhood, plus the LEGO games from Traveller’s Tales… recently I’ve been hooked on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and that’s been a lot of fun too.

4. If we’re talking about a straight-up action movie, then it’d probably *have* to be John Wick. The first one, I mean. I like the sequels a lot, but you can’t beat the first. It’s stylish, moody, astonishingly well-constructed with a lot of brilliant (brutal and effective) action, and a story that seems simplistic but is a lot deeper and more emotional than you might think. Superb stuff!

5. Oh God… of the ones that I’ve actually *watched* all the way through, for me it’s a toss-up between Batman Forever and Man of Steel. The former is just an embarrassing movie by almost every stretch of the imagination – it’s loud, garish, cartoonish in a bad way, with outrageously over-the-top performances from Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face and Jim Carrey as Riddler. It’s like they tried to “modernize” the Adam West show but forgot everything that made that show funny and clever. :ajbemused: And then there’s Man of Steel. Or as I like to call it, “the movie that tried to destroy Superman.” Because really, almost nothing about it says to me that Zack Snyder *got* the character or his world, or that he thought that *Superman* needed to be dark and gritty in order to be taken seriously. There are some who try to tell me it’s really not all that bad, but I point to one thing in response to that – Jonathon Kent telling Clark that he shouldn’t have used his powers to save a bus full of kids from drowning. What. The. Fuck? That “Maybe” is something I find utterly unconscionable and I am disgusted that nobody thought that this was a problem. Maybe “Batman vs. Superman” is the objectively worse movie, but I hate Man of Steel for leading to that point.

6. Animated or live-action? Either way that’s a tough question to ask. I got a lot, mostly animated: on the comedic front I love the original Scooby-Doo Where are You? I also love the classic seasons of SpongeBob, and I had a ball with Duck Dodgers from Cartoon Network. Ooh, and then of course there’s Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. Those two helped me make it through college!
On the more action/adventure side I love the DC Animated Universe shows, plus Avatar the Last Airbender and Samurai Jack. I started watching Gargoyles last year and that was outstanding stuff too.
On the live-action front, I don’t actually do much live-action TV watching. Mostly a couple of superhero or comic-book stuff. In particular some of the shows of “The Arrowverse,” which is fun in a little bit of a guilty-pleasure way; they can be cheesy or soap-opera-ish at times but there’s fun stuff too. The absolute best of the lot though would *have* to be DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, which (after a crummy first season) jettisons nearly all pretensions of serious drama and just goes whole-hog with the absurdity and insanity of its very premise. :pinkiehappy:

7. I honestly don’t know if I can answer that one. I have so many songs I love I don’t know if I could pick *just* one!

Discord the Narrator was next:

1. Favorite MLP villain? (Reformed or not, both count :ajsmug:)
2. Favorite MLP episode?
3. Kinda like FourShadow, which video game genre do you like?
4. What made you join FIMFiction?
5. And this one: anything you didn't like about MLP?

1. Ooh that’s a hard one to figure out. I like a couple of them. Hard to go wrong with several of the classics, like Nightmare Moon and Discord and Chrysalis. I also like Tirek and Sombra a lot too. On the EG side, I like the Dazzlings, Midnight Sparkle and Gaea Everfree too. Don’t really have a number-one pick though…

2. Toss-up between “Lesson Zero” (the first episode I ever watched in full, great introduction to the series and the world as well as being incredibly funny) and “The Perfect Pear” (quite moving, surprisingly bittersweet and mature for a kids’ cartoon and just superb stuff all around).

3. Genre, huh? Interesting… I tend to go for some kind of adventure story, and I know that’s pretty open-ended, but that’s the way I like it. I also really enjoy open world games like Skyrim or The Witcher or Fallout, because done right they just offer all these fascinating places and things to explore and see and do.

4. Initial curiosity led me here, and then it was seeing a couple of really good stories (both for Friendship is Magic *and* Equestria Girls, I feel I should add) that convinced me to hang around more, and finally get an account of my own!

5. Ohh, more than anything, I wish that they’d handled things better with some of their villains in later installments. I don’t object to reformation, not in the least, but it needs to be done *right*, in a certain way to really make it land for the audience. I also don’t feel as strongly about this as I used to (mainly because I looked at myself going into the final season and thought, “Do I really want to keep hating Starlight Glimmer, carry all that anger to the very end of the show?”) but I think that there was a problem with easy forgiveness for some villains.

And rounding it out, is _topside_ with:

1. Who is best pony?
2. What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
3. If you had the misfortune of living in any fictional universe, which one?
4. If a rooster lays an egg on a roof, which way will it fall?
5. Are we alone?

1. Hard question to ask. I have a lot of them! XD Though I suppose if you really pushed me to pick just one, I suppose it might go down to Twilight herself. After all, she’s the one I first watched the show for. It’s her journey that we followed and all.

2. What do you mean, an African or European sparrow? :rainbowlaugh:

3. Ooh boy. Well, not any of the major comic-book universes, that’s for sure. I might love the DC and Marvel universes but I sure as hell wouldn't wanna live there. Same for Star Wars. Not a big enough Star Trek fan to care… I guess I’d have to pick MLP. Yeah, it’s got cockatrices and timberwolves and there are villains scheming to take over about every year, but if you don’t live in Ponyville it’s probably not *that* bad.

4. I have no idea how to answer that one. :rainbowlaugh:

5. I honestly do not know, but I like to keep my opinion open. It’s a big universe out there, after all.

Thanks to all of you for participating! This was fun!
