Equestria Girls: the Gathering · 12:11am Feb 27th, 2020

I have been playing a few games with the Equestria Girls-themed Magic: the Gathering set I'm developing, and it's glorious fun.

Some games are quite one-sided. That's Magic. But plenty of games have had an impressive amount of back-and-forth.

One game was all about huge creatures fighting to see who could grow fastest. On one side, we have a Vlogging Puppy, growing naturally as more subscribe to his channel. On the other side, a Living Constellation of fireflies, which gets Gussied Up by Rarity, Photo's Posse accessorise it too... and then it gets Festooned by two party cannons.

It comes to a head when my 6/6 Vlogging Puppy attacks into the 7/7 Living Constellation. But I had a plan! It all depends on whether a 3-counter Perfect Day For Fun is able to find a creature! It reveals 3 cards... all Plains. >.<
It wasn't all bad since my Puppy was tangled in Caramel Bonds which were giving the Constellation lifelink. We traded beats for a bit and his life total got fairly low before star1wars3 found another enchantment, this time the Consolatory Feast. Combined with another Festoon, that brought it up to be a 9/9 flying lifelink, and I didn't have much I could do about that.

That game also featured a discussion of how Vinyl Scratch the Synesthetic Syncopator can hear ALL THE MUSIC IN THE WORLD.

Another game: Coinky-Dink World gets up to 4 verse counters and I realise that's already going to be removing 12 cards from my library, which at this point was down to 18 cards. Combined with me being the monarch thanks to my Royal Detectives, that would kill me to self-mill in 3 turns! So that Song was never getting popped. But it did end up being part of my game-winning attack... The game was very close to ending due to decking, but I had a plan to win with Songs. I had lots of Forests and Mountains but only 2 Plains. So what I had to do was cast Rainboom Battle one turn; spend the next turn casting Guitar Solo to amp it up to 4 counters as well as dropping another couple of Songs; and then on the next turn, pop the Rainboom Battle at 5 and win the game by attacking with some medley of Coinky-Dink World, Perfect Day for Fun, Tricks Up My Sleeve, and Dance Magic.

The flavour of these games is just delightful. In another, Rainbow Dash the Eager Troublemaker gets in Mortal Peril. The only way out? Hop through a portal to Equestria to become a pegasus! Then beat the opponent for 5 flying damage a turn till he dies.

In the second game with those decks, Thought Prism dubbed my deck "hounds on bicycles.deck" because of how Spike the dog and Cranky Doodle's dog teamed up to ride a Tandem Bicycle (with another in reserve). When the bike crashed into Fluttershy covered in seaweed, the dogs formed a touring band: it turns out two Surly Hounds are the perfect team to fix up the Rainbooms' Tour Bus. One of the dogs got in Mortal Peril and wasn't as good at escaping Peril as Rainbow Dash, so the hamster stepped in as a roadie so that they could get the bus back on the road next turn.

If you'd like to look at more of this set of FOME's Equestria Girls cards, the full visual spoiler is over here. And if you'd like to play with them, that'd be awesome! I'm definitely up for more games. The instructions on my previous blog post still work; comment below if you want to play and let's arrange a time!

(Meanwhile, I've started compiling the next cardset, which is going to be from FiM seasons 1-2 or 1-3...)

This is amazing. You could probably get actual stories out of this. I'll... see about joining in. It's not you; it's me. I'm not the best at, you know, interacting with people in real time. :twilightsheepish:

Yeah, while my sealed pool was awful, the games were very amusing, at least. If only I'd drawn my raccoons...

I would be utterly delighted to play with you. I was over the moon when you said you'd like to play. It's been such fun compiling this set from your creations, it'd be a pity if you can't make it... But all that said, yeah, I can understand the dauntingness of taking what's normally an asynchronous interaction into real time. And we're all busy people too. So do shoot me a message if you find a time when it works for you logistically and however else
