I saw the Sonic the Hedgehog movie · 1:29am Feb 18th, 2020

Despite being sick, despite going alone because I'm sick, most of the people I speak to on a regular basis, even one person I don't see that often, they ALL went and saw Sonic the Hedgehog. So what did I think?

I loved it. It delivered exactly what I wanted it to, threw in some unexpected laughs, I enjoyed it. Jim Carrey steals the show. The characters Tom and Maddie are delightful, as is Crazy Carl and Agent Stone, there's a good cast of people and I've never been more certain of a sequel ever. There's even an ongoing story and I smell trilogy. They are definitely going to turn this into a major thing, or are planning to. People are saying this was made for the fans and I agree- the love shows. As a fan, I could not be happier.

However, as a movie and story analyst, I could see how you would think it was bad. There are a few funny jokes but most of them are very dated or will be soon. Not much is explained, it can get old really fast but this was a movie for the fans. That has to be taking into account: intended audience.

I happen to love fans, being a huge one myself and I love being pandered to. LOVE it. Rogue One was my favorite Star Wars movie. I'm able to see the criticism of it. If you're not a fan, there's probably not much for you. Just as many scenes that I loved, another person who is not a fan would probably hate. That has to be taken into account.

The stories I write are pretty much the same. They are stories for fans, not for the average audience. They are for people who pretty much say I want something crazy, I don't care if it doesn't make sense, I just want to have a good time. Most of my stories are like that, but not all of them. Dan Vs. definitely is. It's not going to be this great masterpiece of the genre, it's going to be a fun ride. That's what this movie is. A fun ride. And some people don't like those either.

Sonic is a long fucking franchise and it has seen its ups and downs. I grew up with S&K Collection, SA, SA2B and Sonic Heroes(fans will know what the first three were.) I played several of the Advance games, haven't played many since. That's how I am as a fan and I know this franchise has not always been good to its fans. No franchise is perfect and the content creator/fan relationship is a relationship. A few bumps are expected.

I believe in being good to your fans. Not alienating or dividing them, but lifting them up to your own level. The more you share, the more you get back, but that is a double-edged sword. The more you create, the better chance you have to make fans but the more criticism and critics you will get. Haters, for lack of a better term, that just don't like what you do and will be vocal about it. As a creator myself, it's easy to get caught between trying to do what your fans want and doing just what you want. It's easy to fall into that trap.

In the end, Sonic fans are pretty easy to please. And the people behind the blue hedgehog still screw up quite often. I'm disappointed Sonic Chronicles was abandoned by BioWare after they were devoured by EA. Among other things. Star Wars fans can be much harder to satisfy, especially considering how high expectations get from everyone involved.

In conclusion, Sonic the Hedgehog is a great movie for fans. Where they are going with it, it feels like a road I have been down before, but not too many times. They have set things up for a sequel, for yet another major resurgence of this franchise, but they could just as easily overdo things and run it into the ground. If they focus too much on the greed, if they lose sight of the foundation they have built like so many others, this success will be buried under the stumbling fall of failure to follow. It can happen with any franchise.

What is new is how society is viewing it. How the media is reporting on it, how we are reacting to it. This is yet another sign that people need to LISTEN TO THEIR FANS. If you want success as someone who is going to put stuff out there, you have to know your audience. First rule of journalism: give the people what they want.

I never had the hand eye coordination to complete further Greenzone 1-1, and thats when I wa younger with bette reflexes.

That, and I was brought up on SatAM, then Adventures, then Underground, so the games relative to TV advert anim confused me.

Yet to see the movie. But, ye gods, the images posted of the first render attempts shows the guys had never even Tried looking at the franchise prior?

Then again, Given Robotnik, not Dr Eggman, Jim Cary really throws me off, being Ace Masktura. :twilightoops:

There are a couple Carrey moments. He has his own signature and it's there, as it is in every role he plays. But he did a bang-up job in this one. I'm not a fan of his twitter account or his other... artwork, but his acting talent is quality. He delivers a good performance.

Also, you're not alone. I never got past the first levels of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Angel Island Zone, Mushroom Hill Zone, never beat the bosses. Knuckles was always my favorite though.

Thing I liked about Sonic and Knuckles for the Megadrivee was it wasnt just a Stacker Cart, but patched the prior games as well to retroactively add Knuckles to them. The only instance of a publishing house run time hacking their own ROMmed assets?

Only thing I remember is the commercial.

To be this good will take Sega Ages.

They got the time.

Then they stole the quote.

If I haven't mentioned it lately, I'm lucky to have a fan like you, my friend. Everyone who creates good content should have a fan like you and Lady Leomon and Dollars and the others. I'm lucky to have you.

Saw it today. It was a good movie, fun, Jim Carrey absolutely makes it. The one thing that threw me a bit was Sonic the Hedgehog, despite being voiced by Ben Schartz and not Bobby Monihan, sounds exactly like Louie from Ducktales 2017.

I was disappointed there was no throwback to Jaleel White. Having the owl from Legend of Zelda for the origin story and what looks to be the warmongering echidna tribe from SA is an interesting touch.

Here's my idea for how shit is going to go down:
Sequel- Tails shows up to tell Sonic he has to come back and lead a resistance against the tribe that killed Long Claw. Robotnik shows up halfway through with some new allies and probably new toys, I'm betting the villain will be Hyper Metal Sonic. Or possibly a Sonic clone, but I'm leaning towards Metal being the villain, which would be fucking awesome. Sonic and Tails team up and win, they decide to go off on an adventure together towards the end to protect people, tearful goodbye from Tom and Maddie. Knuckles is teased at the end.

Movie 3- Knuckles shows up as the last member of the tribe that has apparently been wiped out by something, possibly Chaos, more revelations about Sonic's power. The conclusion of the story arc and Knux is after Sonic. Major fight halfway through the film between Knuckles and Sonic, ends in a draw. Meanwhile, Robotnik is unlocking the secrets of Sonic's power, probably the Chaos Emeralds or something, might go with a new macguffin here, do something entirely original and still have Chaos as the final big bad, and Knuckles, Tails and Sonic team up and defeat them, Sonic may go Super Sonic.

Movie 4- getting overboard now. Shadow shows up, maybe not as the ultimate lifeform but as the opposite of Sonic in some regard. Maybe reuse the story from SA2 and just tweak it a bit, it's not the worst idea out there.

Also, absolutely loved Jim Carrey as Robotnik. Even if I disagree with his politics, I'm going to let him stay with the whole entire franchise just because he amazingly nailed the role of best scientist villain.

ALSO, this definitely had the best evil lair for Robotnik period:
Sonic collection games- in a volcano, the Death Egg, huge airships
Sonic Adventure 1- in metropolis inside a forest, 2 massive TRANSFORMING airships that fire huge lasers
Sonic Adventure 2- inside a pyramid and a planet-destroying space colony
This movie- back of a truck, which he dances, pretends to ski and runs from a dinosaur in

You know Galvatron is the movie working with the Dr.

I do now, and am disappointed that he cannot be voiced by Leonard Nimoy. Rest in peace, Leonard. You earned it.

5205377
God rest his soul.

5205378
"Coronation, Metal? This is bad comedy."

5205380
True but I need to power down for the night so later.

5205381
Goodnight, Machine. Thanks for chattin'.

Hold up, Bioware was making a Sonic game?

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for the DS. They already made one installment and had plans for more. It used a turn-based timed action battle system similar to Elite Beat Agents. I actually have it and it's not bad. BioWare's storytelling is on full display, it's fun, the core cast of characters is there and it's a decent size. They had plans for at least one sequel but then they were sold to EA.

Ah, heard about that one. Damn shame
