So... What is the official name for the KING in the Season 3 premiere? Somber, you say? Or perhaps you think it's Sombra. Let's talk about that...
In the episode itself, I can swear I hear Twilight say something like "King Somber's dark magic" when she and Spike were on the stairs. Maybe I misheard it. I dunno. SOMBER in Dutch means GLOOMY. Other adjectives for SOMBER include dreary, dismal, sombre, sad, dark, morose, dull, gray. Good choices right? Well, let's take a look at SOMBRA.
On the MLP Wiki, he's called SOMBRA but makes a mention that on a OFFICIAL MLP Twitter feed, he's called SOMBER. Interesting... And, as you may know, FIMFic itself is calling him SOMBRA. I even saw a fic already that had SOMBRA in the title. What does SOMBRA mean? It's SHADOW in Spanish. Other adjectives for SOMBRA include darkness, shade, shading, shadiness.
Wow... They both sound good. SOMBRA or SOMBER? Perhaps it's both. Maybe he's called two things, or perhaps they go hand in hand (hoof in hoof?). Let me know in the comments what your thoughts on this is. And don't be swayed by others or other sites. I want YOUR opinion.
It's retorical. Does it matter if he is gloomy or shadowy, 'cause we all know that he is a bad start to a fresh season.
Sombra Somber
Most ponies have multiple names, after all, other than the Princesses or ponies with longer names that are formed of multiple words.
OR
It could be that his name is Somber, and his title is Sombra, as he is a master of shadow magics. The names are simply similar, leading to confusion and the names being swapped in history books interchangeably.

It would explain the inconsistencies, and just remember... All we saw was a shadow of his power.
We don't know for a fact he's actually gone for good.
And since this season is short, there's a good chance it'll be arc-driven, as opposed to the episode-driven previous seasons.
We could be seeing more of the Crystal Kingdom, and possibly more of Somber Sombra.
ooh, Somber Sombra, 'gloomy shadow' I could see that. And with such similar names, it'd be hard to get it right every time.
The staff working on the show have confirmed that it is SomBRA not SomBER

actually, we don't know that that was, in fact, the real Somber Sombra. For all we know, that was just a projection, as he was turned into shadow and then dropped into a light less expanse many thousands of miles to a side. For all we know, Somber Sombra never actually appeared, a theory supported by his lack of any noticeable intellect, and a lack of tactical ability (which makes no sense for anyone who was able to single-hoofedly able to conquer a nation of powerful magic-users. I mean, really, how would that make sense? He got lucky?)

Just watching "The Crystal Empire" again and I'm even more confused then before. Celestia calls him Sombra but Twilight AND one of the Crystal Ponies calls him Somber...

Must be. Because there were actually FOUR moments where his name is mentioned. 2 being Sombra and the other two being Somber.

whelp, there we go. And my version even works with all the people in charge saying that it's Sombra, because if that's his title, then officials and anyone he's lording it over would be calling him Sombra, and the rest would call him Somber.
Then again, we could be over thinking this and it was simply a matter of accents. I doubt it though, and that would ruin some perfectly good debates, like this one.
