Now offical - season nine is the last one. After the end of G4 a new CGI movie marks a start of Generation 5.
Don't know how to feel, really. Well, yeah, I know that sooner or later G4 will end. And objectively speaking even I can admit that writers obviously have problems with new ideas. But..! Don't know... I watched this show for years. Literally. And now it ends. 
I hope that G5 would be a good one but... I really, really doubt it.

They are obviously tired of us :).
ButI kinda expected this. Target audience limited possible scenarios and I strongly suspect that they never hoped that show go beyond season three. Maybe I wrong but "Celestia's Ballad" from "Magical Mystery Cure" always give me a feeling that this is supposed to be the end. But show become so popular that Hasbro chose to continue. They can't do anything complex because of target audience so writers start to rehash old episodes, "reset" characters and force them to learn the same "friendship lessons" again and again. IMO they could rise an "age bar" and start to do better but, in opinion, Hasbro feared that if they change something too much, show popularity start to drop and they lost money.
