Writing Journal: Serious Romance · 3:15am Dec 10th, 2018
Journal Date: 12/9
Today, I started on what will probably be my most serious romance to date. It's somber. But I want to write it because I feel it has a lot of potential for me as a writer to explore modes of thought and methods of delivery that I've only used briefly before.
Namely, this is a First Person Twilight Sparkle romance. From Twilight Sparkle's perspective. I want to get inner voice and outer voice to match and pair well, even when inner and outer voices are opposing each other (false front). So far, I think I'm doing well at it. I've had some early feedback, and been told the character voice is spot on for the three characters introduced so far (first chapter).
It has a bit of an altered timeline from what's normally expected, too. And that plays into the story's plot as well. This story takes place on the eve of a major change in the character's lives. Not, like, the literal eve, but a figurative eve. Things are about to change, and they will immediately get worse, but slowly get better.
So. Timeline:
- 2.5 weeks before story start: Baby is announced (1 week before Cutie Re-Mark actions take place.) Cadance at this point is 3 weeks pregnant.
- 2 weeks before story start Starlight "reformed" (Time shennanigans, so only one day passes here)
- 4 days before story start: Starlight is Twilight's student. Shining Armor has been called away on an urgent mission. Cadance stays behind to watch the empire.
- 2 days before story start Shining Armor is called away, Twilight offers to visit Cadance, with Starlight and Spike in tow.
- Story start Twilight arrives in Crystal Empire. With Spike and Starlight in tow.
This is pre-self-forgiveness Starlight. So she's a bit prone to... histrionics at the start. But she gets better as more and more of the weight of responsibility is pushed on her, and she rises to the occasions it presents to her. Eventually, she gets called back to Ponyville along with Spike on a joint Cutie Mission.
This is going to be an AU story, too, so rewriting the wishy-washy-timey-wimey bubbles of the show's timeline doesn't really bother me. Especially when it's been so nebulous in the past.
So that's where the story starts. Roughly around the 4th bullet point. I am really looking forward to taking this one on. So far, so productive. Just a little over 9000 words over two chapters today, and I do like the words. First draft, though, so who knows how much if it's going to stay. Character introductions, setup of the plot and theme of the story... Starting with the heavy plot and a little melancholic emotion.
Update to One Night (Golden Harvest/Octavia Melody romance) Title change: Playing to the Heart
Finished up the first major plot event in two of the story arcs, taking a break from editing because too much of it is flowing around in my brain and I forget what I cut already and forget what I need to add still. So that's why Tides of Love is getting a working over right now.
Ohhh, this sounds intriguing! :)

I hope it turns out well. I'm most worried about my ability to catch the emotional breadth of the main arc.
Like how it sounds, write on

Am doing as we speak! Or write. And... give it about ten seconds before it's actually "Right now."
