Blog Number 47: Deceleration Edition

Current NaPoWriMo Word Count: 37,406 words.

After a fantastic start, it's a shame things are slowing down. One should be realistic and pragmatic about this, but I am a bit saddened the original burst hasn't lasted.

In other news, 21 scenes left for my novel! If I did only one a day, I'd easily make it before the end of the year. Trouble is it's always the last few scenes that are the hardest to write. Figures.

At the moment, I'm stepping back and taking a break from writing, just for a day or two. Part of me suspects it was my pushing myself that caused the deceleration. In which case, the simple solution is to relax, recharge, and let things come naturally again. No big deal.

To keep things interesting, I did switch it up every now and again by writing shorter stories, or at least I tried to. How do people write stories of a thousand words or two? If I set out to try, it quickly spirals out of control (for the record, the last two published fics were attempts to write a 150-word flashfic and an intro to a story I couldn't muster the strength to write in full). I feel I could better grasp the mechanics of stories in general if I could practise regularly with shorter, more concise, formats.

Also, I had a look at some Royal Canterlot Library interviews recently. What a cross-section of fandom perspective! My favourite answers to read are the ones for questions like "What do you get from the show?", "What do you want from life?", and "Why do you write?". I even started watching Antiquarian recently because his answers were so fascinating. And every time I see a fascinating answer, I almost wish I could go back and edit my own.

Otherwise, not much to report. It was a moderately quiet week. Hopefully, next time I write, the old mechanisms will be fully operational. I'm currently (overambitiously) aiming to surpass 50,000 words before the half-way mark. In any case, wish me luck!

Impossible Numbers, out.
