The Result of Absolute Power: My Reaction

I posted that story roughly ten minutes before I had to go to work, and came home expecting some people to have some pretty strong opinions about it. I fully expected to have some people accuse me of defending Cozy Glow, or taking it took far. The biggest expectation I had was for people to accuse me of jumping on the bandwagon that is the pretty loud outcry over this episode.

Funny how the one I expected most was the one that didn't happen.

I was rushed to do the author's note, so I forgot to mention some things regarding the story. I decided to post a blog now that I have the time to try and defend my position here.

JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON

So, the first thing I should address is my own personal feelings on the accusation itself. I've told you guys before I don't necessarily like getting directly involved in big FUBAR things, either politically or just domestically, or... whatever you'd call this. Internetally? Ponyly?

Anyways, while I don't like getting involved, I sometimes feel strongly enough about a subject that I feel I need to do something, either talk on a blog, or maybe make my views known a little more subtly with a short story. Believe it or not, that was the case with my very first short story, Visiting Memories. I have some pretty intense fears regarding mind control and suggestion. The idea that someone could make me kill one of my very few close friends... that absolutely terrifies me and is the source of some nightmares. So I decided to try and work through it a bit with a story. Which failed, but still.

This story involves my feeling regarding children, which by now most of my readers will know because of my flat refusal to throw the CMC into any of the main plots of my stories, unless they are not inherently dangerous. I don't like the idea of even looking at that line, nevermind crossing it in any way shape or form. Fantasy characters or not. That is why I was personally outraged over the imprisonment of Cozy Glow, and her involvement as a villain in the first place.

I don't normally "jump on the bandwagon", not unless it ties into my own personal feelings on the matter, so while nobody actually accused me of that yet, I would appreciate it if that didn't happen. Again, and I want to stress this, I have not actually been accused of this yet. I am simply trying to head it off just in case.

DEFENDING COZY GLOW

Next, I want to explain that I'm not defending Cozy Glow here. If this were real life, the fact of the matter is Cozy Glow took drastic measures, with severe consequences, to sate a delusion of grandeur. In real life, that would land you in a mental hospital for the criminally insane, and because it's a child it would also get you regular therapy sessions to try and help fix what caused this insanity.

You would not get put in what amounts to a maximum security prison with ready access to the one who helped you commit the crime in the first place, arguably the one who caused you to do it.

I do not deny that Cozy Glow needed to be punished. I am merely protesting what the punishment was. This would have been resolved quite neatly with a scene of Cozy Glow's fate being discussed between the Princesses and her parents, or just not done at all and leaving it as bit of a noodle incident. Still upsetting, but not nearly as much as the banishment.

TAKING IT TOO FAR

I did take it too far, but I did that on purpose. I purposefully blew it out of proportion to try and showcase that putting Cozy Glow in Tartarus, next to Tirek no less, was one of those "You Dumbass" moments. That's all there was to it. Also, while I singled out Celestia as the so called "Bad Guy" of the story, I did not do so because I dislike her. I in fact love Celestia's canon character. It was just easy to use her in a sort of Dumbledore kind of way, that's all.

Alright, I think I managed to cover what I wanted to. I don't mind people not liking my stories, it's gonna happen, plain and simple, so getting upset is pointless, but I still like to make sure you guys understand why I did what I did, that way you can make a clean judgment on whether you like it or not.
