Knighty's ultimate plan for Fimfiction is to open up the backend system for a separate general story/fanfiction site to compete against Wattpad and Fanfiction.net.

Fimfiction will still exist for many years to come, as long as the "Genfic" project, as I've heard it be referred to as, succeeds.

It's the server software Knighty and Xaquseg wrote that Fimfiction runs on. It's the system that runs all of the auto-approval, blog and story posting, group management, etc.

I've heard several times now that Knighty is planning on repurposing Fimfiction's code to run independently of MLP once G4 ends, and expand into general stories, hence the name "Genfic".

In fact, the style change of Fimfiction from the green and brown color scheme to a more professional blue and grey scheme actually has much to do with this. It's part of the backend's disassociation with MLP in preparation for Genfic.

Yeah. Genfic is supposedly going to a be an entirely separate site from Fimfiction, but will use the same server. It'd probably mean that if you have an account on Fimfiction, then the account would also work on Genfic since it's the same login system.

It would also mean that all stories on Fimfic would be available on Genfic for the wider audience.

I can't entirely confirm this though. I only know about this from random conversations I've found on Knighty's user page, the Fimfiction API group, and a few other places. I think I've seen a discussion on it show up in Discord before, but I don't remember exactly.

Seems like the latest feature of Fimfiction is being able to search by story/character/genre tags with #.

Also, the addition of the ability to choose genres can easily be reworked to not have to force you to always include MLP as one of the series that the story uses. With a small tweak, you'd be able to post stories focusing entirely on non-MLP worlds and characters.

Even if Genfic doesn't come to light, Fimfiction's gonna be around for a long time. $3k+ a month through Patreon is more than enough to pay every expense the site has in order to run the server, pay for electricity, whatever rent is needed, internet and hosting bills, etc.
