I've got an admission to make, and it's appropriate for this time of year.
I'm a fan of the specific sub-genre of horror movies you might call torture porn. My favorite of the "classic" horror movies was Hellraiser. It didn't hurt that Pinhead had a lot of great quotes. I read the Clive Barker book the series was based on and was firmly "meh", but the movies were still good.
In these more modern times, I found the Saw series quite enjoyable. At least, at first. I've only watched the first three before I gave it up. Even for series I like, I can't bring myself to watch many movies these days (aside from the Marvel ones, but that's for another post). At some point Hollywood keeps making movies simply to make more money, and I take umbrage to that. Now, if they still have new ideas, new topics, new ground to cover, that's fine. But when things start to become an annual release.... no thanks.
And yes, I realize where we're all sitting as we read this. Irony is delicious, and animated entertainment mostly get a pass from me - I like the bright colors.
I mention all this because it relates to a story idea I'd very nearly forgotten about. It concerns Luna, a time skip, and a long term recovery thanks to an episode at the hands of an entire changeling hive (not sex). For reasons I can't understand, this lens also helps me understand/write/speak as characters. I struggle with that normally.
I really should pin down a name for this idea.
In both cases, the appeal is the recovery. The struggle to be whole again, or as whole as is possible. That's always been interesting to me.
As Iago said in Aladin 2; "You'd be surprised what you can live through."
