Glossary of Terms: (be wary of possible spoilers)
- (Please note that this list of terms is quite outdated and may not reflect the current state of the story. A revised list will be created during the rewrite process.)
- Blunthorn - Derogative term for unicorn, implying ineptitude at magic.
- Tartarus - Expletive, used in place of "hell", e.g. "What in Tartarus is going on?" Note that Tartarus as a literal location does not exist prior to the story.
- Elysium - Expletive, used in place of "heaven" or "god", e.g. "For Elysium's sake". Known for having 'blue hills', e.g. "What in the blue hills of Elysium?!"
- Nag - Derogative term for equines, similar to "bitch".
- Council of the Nine - Committee for the regulation of magic, made of nine members: 4 left-wing, 4 right-wing and one High Judicator. This governing body has power even over the king, but attempts to remain impartial to the world's politics.
- Magician - Derogative term for professional unicorns, implying parlour tricks and illusion, not wizardry.
- Stables - The location where carriages and chariots are kept. Also used as slang for cheap accommodation, barracks, and other mass housing.
- Steed - Another word for the driver--or puller--of a cart, particularly while transporting ponies.
- Faust's Academy for Magic and Learning - A school for teaching magic in Canterlot, particularly for gifted unicorns. This was later renamed to Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns after Discord's reign.
- The Valkyries - Like a proto-Wonderbolts, the Valkyries are Canterlot's first line of defence; a swift and skilled team of pegasi elite. This group was succeeded by the Royal Legion of Cloudsdale. The Valkyries were originally formed as an anti-Windigo measure.
- Yearling - A lesser insult of age, aimed at one younger than oneself. When used properly, the term is typically reserved for children in the education system.
- Hitching Posts - Used by drivers to secure their carts, like modern bike-rails.
- Hack - An old horse, usually male, who is known to be bad-tempered and stubborn.
- Hophouse - A slightly derogatory term inferring an inn is rough, dingy, and serves cheap mead with no frills to unsavoury customers.
- Terra - The planet upon which they reside. While the phrase "what on earth" exists, it literally refers to the dirt.
- Magick/Magicks - The umbrella term used for classifying all schools of magic. The word 'magic' is used to define both real spells and slights of hoof, but while "teleportation magic" is a school of magick, 'tricks' are not. This terminology has largely become obsolete in modern times, choosing to use "magic" and no plural in all cases, and is typically only seen in ancient written works. More specifically it was a term used to differentiate magic spells from the innate 'magick' found in all living creatures, namely the three "pony magicks", 'terran', 'unicorn' and 'pegasus'.
- Backwash - A derogatory term given to seedy neighbourhoods, particularly inns with a reputation of the overconsumption of cider, implying the bad manners of its drunken clientele/population.
- North/South Brine - The bodies of water to the west of Equestria, colloquially known as The Frozen Sea and South Sea respectively, which South Sea Post was named after. They were later renamed to the North and South Luna Ocean after the sisters reclaimed the throne.
