Mulan: A 20th Anniversary Retrospective · 4:50pm Jun 5th, 2018
As mentioned with the Quest for Camelot retrospective, the film had more troubles than good before it became overshadowed by a few other, clearly better, animated features. "Mulan" is one of them.
If you were to ask me which was the first Disney Film I ever saw in theaters, this is the one I have a clear memory seeing, followed by "Tarzan" and "Toy Story 2." Nowadays, in high school, and especially among my colleagues and fellow Deviantartists, this has a very strong following. I wouldn't blame you for liking it as well, as it too is also one of my favorite Disney films.
After the relative shortcoming, but still successful, "Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Hercules," this returns the traditional Disney Princess formula. But this time, instead it goes further by having our heroine go out to war (yes, I am aware that this is based on the true story as much as Balto is to itself... Which isn't saying much...). Alongside, she is accompanied by a demoted guardian dragon named Mushu (voiced by Eddie Murphy), an on-off lucky cricket, her steed, a bunch of recruits, including their captain Shang (voiced by B.D. Wong of Law and Order: SVU and Jurassic Park fame). Together they fight off the impending Hun army lead by Shan Yu to save their empire.
A simple story like that, and yet it gets the cult following, the "Kung Fu Panda" before it became to be. Does it have its flaws? Maybe a few, but not anything too bothersome. If I could see it again in theaters, I would.
The sequel isn't good, though... But not as bad as some of their worst sequels.
Mulan a good movie that hold a special place in my heart not only is it a movie that I watched growing up but it actually came out only 3 days after I was born
