I recently spat a slew of verbal Diarrhea at Present Perfect about some stupid EG thing I had floating round in my head. One thing left to another and I now find myself in need of advice, or at least suggestions. I'm looking for novels (fanfic or otherwise) that exemplify the modern fantasy/noir detective genres, that are not the Dresden Files. Anyone got any recommendations?
Have you read Altered Carbon?
Though I guess that's a cyberpunk/noir detective novel...

I have not. I tried to watch the Netflix thing, but didn't like it. Is the book different? Specifically, is it paced better?
The Daniel Faust books are about a thief/conman in Las Vegas who is also a magician, but they have a fairly strong magic detective vibe, especially in the early books. Their spin-off series, the Harmony Black books, are about an FBI agent who is also a witch and her team, which sort of counts.
I could ask my wife as she is a librarian but since she is the YA librarian she may only really know YA books of this sort would you still be interested?

Oh! Thanks. I'll give those a look.

Sure. Some YA is garbage and some is really good. Iirc, His Dark Materials gets shunted to YA despite being, you know, paradise lost. I figure since this is still MLP/EG that throwing out YA is a poor decision. I don't want to go full Grimdark or anything, just get a better appreciation for what works in the genre and what doesn't.

Have you tried Simon R Green's Night Side series? Turns out it is not YA but it was the first thing she thought of after Dresden Files.

No! Adding to my list~
THANKS~

I guess I don't know how to answer; I liked/appreciated them both, though I did enjoy the book more.
I think I'll say "yes," because the Netflix series sort of tried to pack in a lot that the book didn't, strangely (usually you'd expect a novel adaptation to cut content, not add it).

COol. I'll try to give it a look.
The first episode had both my wife and I ready for it to end about 30 minutes in, sadly. I think they tried to shove too much world building and not enough intersecting stuff (context) in up front. Hopefully the book does a better job.
I'm really hoping I can actually write this story. :X

Yeah... Altered Carbon spent so much time being dark and edgy that it forgot to have anything of significance happen! (At least before I turned it off in boredom.)
They're old, and they're not Urban Fantasy (i.e., set in our world), but the "metallic" series from Glen Cook are pure Dashel Hammit transposed to Fantasyland. I think Cold Copper Tears is the first book in the series. I recommend this because he nailed the classic hard-boiled detective genre.
The other one that jumps to mind is the Secret Histories series by Simon Green. Also very good... The Man with the Golden Torc is the first book.

Out of curiosity, did you ever try the Faust books?

Sorry. I Haven't read anything longer than chapter or two in months. I'm going to order them on amazon right now so I don't forget.
