Season 8 Episode 1&2 the Friendship School · 4:41pm Mar 24th, 2018
We all know that the King of Ducks is going whine about how evil the new season of MLP is being and how much better Starfleet would be. Because you know: The Alicorn nazis from outer space have been known so much so far about how well their education system works. Being able to not even identify a simple robot when it attacks a place or lacking common sense.
Anyway, lets talk about something fun. The new season opener. Which in my opinion was overall okay.
A two parter meant to introduce us to the new setting, which will be one of the more or less plot driving forces of the season. And considering the number of new students and some of the leaked episode synopsises (is that the correct plural), it is obvious that unlike the cutie map (which lets face it, was rather underused often times) this place will play quite a bit of a role in this season.
Which I like. I always welcome changes that open up new possibilities.
Or in this case give us the chance of meeting new characters. I admit, I have still to properly remember the "Student Six"es names, but I thought they were fun. I especially like the griffon and the changeling.
As for things I liked about the episode?
Well, the chancellor, voiced by none other than Maurice "The BRain" LaMarche himself was surprisingly entertaining. A racist dickhead, but one of the kind you love to hate, if you get my drift. I also realy like his last line, where he accuses the school of potentially threatening the safety of Equestria. Considering what some of the spoilers indicate for the season finale... lets just say, it was a slight form of foreshadowing.
I also liked that Twilight did not just go all crazy and in fact was rather level headed for most of it. Pinkie was fun with her party cannons and kudos for Starlight to not just try and cheer up Twilight, but actually give her a brutally honest, yet necessary explanation of what went wrong.
Songs were okay but nothing world changing and... dear lord, they really like to lampshade the songs by now, don't they? After all, EMber's reaction... I start to think that if Equestria ever starts war with the dragons, the flying flamethrowers will surrender after Pinkie sang "Smile, Smile, Smile" for the tenth time.
Lastly, I found it kind of awesome that the movie is treated as canon in this season, being mentioned in the beginning and so on. Lets hope that down the line we may get a Tempest Shadow cameo somewhere now.
Overall: Seven out of ten friendship diplomas.
