At the gentle nudging of an online friend, I’ve started playing Neopets again after an absence of more than eleven years (that’s ridiculous, it’s not even — wait, wrong game). There are some changes that have been made to the site that I’m not especially a fan of, particularly with regards to the monetization methods, but given that it’s the only thing keeping the site afloat I can’t be too upset. Heck, given how severely understaffed the Neopets Team is now, it’s a miracle that it’s even still working, especially since they’re still in the process of converting everything from Flash to HTML5.
That said, I’ve very quickly rediscovered why the site completely consumed so much of my life when I was a tween, and with the ability to customize your pets being a thing now I’ve found it taking up far more of my time than I really intended. Between that and my new job it’s a wonder I’ve managed to get any writing done at all.
Anyway, this is my pet, in case you were wondering:
I played that when it first launched i am amazed it's still alive.

It’s practically undead at this point, but yeah, it’s technically still functioning.
Funny, I got hit with the nostalgia stick recently, too, but for a different game.
After a friend of mine got a random email from Cipsoft regarding a dormant account, him and I started playing Tibia again, of all things.
I'm guessing they're getting desperate for players, too, if they'd chase down my buddy to resub after more than a decade of not playing.
Never played Neopets myself, but that is a cute dragon.

The species is called a shoyru, which is currently the most popular pet on the site, and has been for most of its existence, IIRC. It’s not hard to see why.
On another note, it took me way too long to realize that “shoyru” is just two swapped letters away from the Japanese word for “rising dragon.”
