A JD Review: The Punisher (2017) · 10:32pm Dec 1st, 2017

Marvel's most brutal Netflix series to date. And it's absolutely glorious.

As a standalone series, The Punisher works in delving into the psyche of Frank Castle in a way that we really couldn't see in Daredevil season 2. It expands more on Frank Castle as a character while also telling a gripping and horrifying story on the murder of his family. I really want to get into spoilers, so my quick non-spoiler review will have to be this:

Excellent series. Absolutely loved it. You will too if you're a fan of the Marvel Netflix series and a fan of Marvel in general. 9/10.

Now go watch it.

SPOILER REVIEW

So, The Punisher takes place a few months after the events of The Defenders (which, by the way, is a fantastic series and you should go watch that one too). We follow Frank Castle who murdered the gangs that were involved in the killing of his family. He has given up the title of "The Punisher" now that everyone dead was, well, dead, and now he tries to live a normal life. That doesn't go as planned when Frank learns that the government and military were also involved in the murder of his family.

Frank's back at square one, finding out who orchestrated the murders and taking them down. And so, we have our series. And I absolutely loved it! This series introduces us to Micro, as well as one of Frank's worst enemies named Billy Russo, aka "Jigsaw". This series deals with PTSD in a way I haven't seen, which ultimately brings a soldier to commit acts of terrorism because he believed in a radical view. This was really well done, and offered plenty of strong suspense when Frank had to take him down.

I especially loved Micro in this series, which is something I thought I wouldn't have. He was framed and almost "murdered" by the government for leaking secrets, and he seeks out Castle because he believes he's the only one who can get him back to his family. The duo of Frank and Micro works so well in this series.

In the end, Frank kills those responsible for murdering his family, he gets Micro back with his family, and he lets Billy Russo live after brutally maiming his face (this ultimately leads Russo to becoming Jigsaw). The brutality in this series comes just above Daredevil in my opinion, especially the last fight between Frank and Billy (absolutely vicious scene when Frank tore up his face with shattered glass). And even though the series starts off a little slow, it definitely picks up down the line. That's probably my only nitpick.

Great start to the series. Can't wait for season 2. Check it out if you can.

9/10.

To those who don't know Jigsaw's claim to fame is SURVIVING Frank Castle which might as well be a super power.

4739683 Any common criminal that survives an encounter with Frank Castle whether they're intentionally left alive or not honestly deserve some kind of award.
