So I finally managed to find a decent video of Heathers the Musical on YouTube. Man, what a great show. It's crazy dark, and super fucked up, but so much fun. After watching, I'm even more convinced that the Dazzlings were based off the Heathers. And Sunset does make a very convincing Veronica. Even Starlight works shockingly well as Pauline Fleming, though I doubt there's any actual connection there.
But who could play JD? Sadly, for all their villains, the ponies simply haven't produced an appropriate sociopath for the job. Honestly, evil Sunset could have fit the role nicely, if she wasn't already so obviously meant to be Veronica.
EDIT: Here's the video I found for the play. It's an amateur production, but a damn good one. (I'd hope I wouldn't have to mention this, but I'm pretty sure this is the equivalent of an R ratinng.)

I'm torn, Sunset is anything but nerd -- in fact, she is hotter than Adagio. It feels wrong having her in that role. Awesome picture tho. No questions about it.

Hmm, I see where you're coming from (though Sunset is totally a nerd, but she doesn't dress like one). But, to be fair in the show Veronica is supposed to be pretty hot too, she just didn't dress like it until the Heathers got a hold of her. But yeah, Sunset has always dressed pretty well.
Actually, I'm liking Sunset as JD more and more. As much as she would fit for Veronica, she's the only person I could really see making a convincing JD. Except maybe a human Chrysalis, but I'm trying to avoid the obvious villains. Plenty of others could play Veronica, including SciTwi or Trixie. Moondancer could probably work too, but honestly I don't like her all that much. Starlight would be tempting, if she wasn't just so damn perfect as Ms. Fleming.

But there is fire in Sunset. She is a natural leader and an inspiration. I can't honestly see her let anyone push her around, or ask Adagio for a boon. As for JD, let's just be unoriginal and go with Sombra. Just because he is so devoid of any character that you can mold him into any archetype. Absence of good male characters really hurts MLP as far as fanfiction goes.

True. Well, she could be the movie Veronica! I haven't seen it yet but from what I gather she seems much more... intentional, in her villainy. But I still like her as JD. As much as I like Sombra, he seems too evil to play even JD. Like, JD is not a good guy, but he's at least able to pretend for five minutes
Although, if you took IDW Sombra, pre-transformation... hmm...
I have to say I'm not convinced about the inspiration for the Dazzlings coming from there. I haven't yet got around to watching the stage show, but the movie is quite un-Dazzling. I went into it knowing the premise and having seen Candy Store, so I was quite disappointed by how far removed from Mean Girls the rest of the movie was (really, hopefully the stage show is a lot better, but the movie is pretty damn terrible).
Notably Heather Chandler is underwhelming (and hardly in it), a long way from Adagio. Heather McNamara is quite different to Sonata, and Heather Duke kind of has her Aria moments but also kind of not really
I would say that Regina George and Karen Smith are much better fits for Adagio and Sonata (and that's how the Heathers come across in Candy Store, so hopefully the musical has pushed them more in that direction as that would be a vast improvement), even if Aria is nothing like Gretchen Wieners.
From what I've been told, Princess Azula and her two friends are the closest fit for the sirens, and most likely to be the inspiration. TV Tropes has a paragraph on it, if I remember rightly.

Hmm, I admit there may be a but of wishful thinking there XD If nothing else, I know a lot of fan writers are usung them as inspiration though! Personally I havent seen the movie, but I could definitely see some good parallels in the musical version. I have a wonderful link to a great versiin of the musical I can post here when I have access to my computer. I was actually halfway through rewatching it before I went in foe surgery XD
You know the plot already, so I dont think its a spoiler to say that Heather Chandler is significanfly more entertaining once she is dead haha. The Duke/Aria is probably the weakest connection, aside from them both kind of wanting to topple the alpha. I do think McNamara and Sonata are the closest, but that may be fics coloring my perspective haha.
Yeah, the sirens definitely have a similar vibe to Ozai's Angels. I personally think they both have a common inspiration, since that's kind of a dynamic you see a lot. (Alpha bitch, with one peppy and one angsty beta follower). My working theory was that they took at least partial inspiration from the Heathers (since they were apparently very iconic at the time) but all three groups could also share a common inspiration even farther back.

It's real good. Man, I wish I could be in a production of Heathers. I reckon I could maybe pull off J.D. I think the main challenges would be Dead Girl Walkign and Fight For Me. That said, I delight in a challenge. I love playing the villain.

Oh they're great. At first, J.D just seems like someone who needs a BIG fucking hug and A LOT of help, and then Meant To Be Yours is the full realization of "Oh holy shit he's a Yandere." That, and the face Veronica makes when she hears "When Mom was alive, we lived halfway normal." It's the look of someone who has fucked up BIG time.

Oh yeah. He might not have completely redeemed himself, (he DID kill three people who were assholes at worst and nearly blew up a school with most if not all of the students in it) but the guy has been through some SHIT. Makes you wonder, what if things had been different? "I wish your Mom had had been a little stronger. I wish she'd stayed around a little longer. I wish your Dad were good, I wish growups understood. I wish we'd met before they convinced you life is war, I wish you'd come with me," So many what ifs. But at that point, it's too late for J.D "I wish I had more TNT." I need to rewatch that musical. It's so good! And the movie at some point, see how it differs.
