My Reaction to the My Little Pony Movie · 12:08pm Oct 10th, 2017
I have this quirk I sometimes refer to as "mind infection." It's when a story impresses and inspires me so much that I can't rest or focus on other tasks for a while due to my brain crafting a fan fiction or original story based on what I just read or saw. In the average case, I only have to run a scene or two in my head to stave the mind infection off. The better the story that kicks off a mind infection, though, the harder it is to shake.
I saw the MLP movie last night, and I got maybe three hours of sleep before I woke up due my brain working in overdrive on a fan-fic of the Order-naries arriving in Canterlot just a bit too late to be involved in the inciting incidents and instead have a side adventure being chased by the Storm King to the Crystal Empire and back after managing to make off with the petrified Cadance.
And, in this concept, Ash gets his horn broken early on, because why not have one of my OCs become a foil for Tempest even though she wouldn't be in the story until the climax, if at all? (and also Ash attracts an absurd majority of the slapstick/physical pain I deal out to my characters)
Granted, this "mind infection" thing is an extremely subjective way to judge a work, and I'm sure the reason the Movie had such an impact on me is likely due to how much I've come to rely on Friendship is Magic for creative inspiration since I was introduced to the show. Still, I enjoyed the movie tremendously. It's not perfect; there are a few small plot holes, missed opportunities, and "fridge logic" questions I could make, but overall it's got everything that's great about the show and a little more.
I may actually write this fan-fic idea once I've finished Trials of a Changeling Queen. The current concept requires that chapter of Cabbage Patch's life be complete, at least.
