Well then.
I just spent an enjoyable afternoon viewing the new movie. Now I'm fully aware that the mlp fan community in my area is pretty small, but still this was ridiculous. I was in a completely empty theater until ten minutes into the opening previews, when a mother and her three year old entered, dashing my hopes to do a running DWK-slash-cinema-sins-esque snarky commentary.
Still, without going into spoilers, the songs were catchy, there were more potential meme-faces than in the buckball episode, and only one or two fandom callouts. I also know of at least two specific frames which are definitely going to be showing up all over the place as cover art for shipping stories. The animation is... interesting, and for some reason makes me feel like I'm watching a movie from 2005. Can't quite put my finger on why.
As for the Storm King, you know who he reminds me of? Vaughn Du Clark from iZombie
He also really needs some backstory, as there are quite a few confusing threads dangling.
There are also two very noticeable out-of-character moments, and you'll know exactly when you see them, but I can see how they were necessary to progress the plot.
Overall, enjoyed it. Think it might be enough to inspire me to buckle down and write something this weekend.
Also managed to nab a whole stack of promotional flyers. Score!
