S7E17 - To Change a Changeling - Thoughts · 7:56pm Sep 2nd, 2017

I really don't know how I feel about this one.

Why does the hive have what is pretty much the equivalent of a safe space? No. Really. Why?

The Changelings, themselves I can give a pass too, I like them truth be told. Thorax's brother is fun, and I like that he Thorax have distinguishing looks that show they are obviously royalty or whatever you want to call it. Like how Celestia and Luna are taller than average ponies etc.

The monster kinda disappointed me, just looked like a large mole. Was hoping for a new hybrid looking thing at least, like it had four arms or something. And yes I know the real life counterpart is a deadly hunter as well and is freaky yet cool. I'm just 'eh' about the design of the monster.

But, my main gripes are, I think Thorax is a little weak as a ruler. I mean yeah, he convinced all bar one to change so kudos to him on that and it plays nicely from the last time we saw him. But I don't know, I feel there should have been tough love in it. Like, he and Pharynx should have been properly arguing, with Pharynx openly being defiant and showing his brother doesn't have much grasp on him. I dunno, that might just be me.

Also, side note, gotta love how Starlight is so quick to just give up on Pharynx. It was, what, a couple of hours?

The other is, why the fuck is Trixie such a fucking horrible character in this? Like, seriously. I know she does act like this in a fair few of her appearances but I dunno this episode rubbed me the wrong way. I don't like Trixie that much recently like I really don't. all she does it comes off as obnoxious and arrogant and a dick. And yes, she has always been that, but back before the recent season, it was funny, kinda like an 'oh you' scenario. But now? It just annoys me too much.

I dunno, maybe that's just me. What did you lot think of it?

I'm fairly tired writing this so I'm probably just complaining like the miserable Brit I am.

To be fair Pharynx doesn't really give you much of a choice he'll just spit in your face when you try and help him see the good side to his brother's way.

I'm sorry but I am 75% on Pharynx's side. Every time a changeling opened their mouth I just kept going, burn it, burn it with fire. They went from one extreme to the other. Neither is right. However, Pharynx did seem to grow even before his transformation. He truly cared about his hive, and his people. All he wanted to do was protect them. That's a noble goal. While the other changelings had no idea how to protect themselves. How is that good. An empire or kingdom cannot last unless they can protect themselves. and the line "what enemies" made me roll my eyes. Just ask the ponies how many monsters they've had to face. I mean even the ponies have guards, not very good guards, but still.

The only aspect of Pharynx I don't agree with is how he physically tries to change the other changelings. You don't destroy others property, or force them to be the way you want them to be even if you think its the right thing to be (you know like how Starlight and Trixie tried to do with Pharynx)

Plus while he talked about what he used to do in a nostalgic fashion, not once did Pharynx say they should go back that way, or have queen Chrysalis back as their leader. He never threatened his hivmates or even tried to take the hive from his brother. Heck, one even said he was teaching the grubs how to hiss. He wasn't hurting them, he was spending time with them and teaching them. Perhaps not what the changelings wanted, but Pharynx understood the importance of a warrior class, or soldier class. Unlike the hive mates who cheered when he left, all he wanted to do was protect them. In other words, he was a hero. But he didn't look cute, and in pony world that means he's evil.

That did me a chuckle
