I honestly feel like the whole Mary Sue/Gary Stu thing has lost a lot of its meaning as I often see it get thrown around at characters someone simply doesn't like personally.

Very true. Really, what is considered a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu/Anti-Sue is subjective, but really by definition it's a character that transcends the reality of the universe they live in. To me, the best ways to pick them out:
1. If a character has only positive traits
2. If a character only has negative traits
3. If a character can do what any other character does but better
4. If a character is used as a means to make other characters look better
People really need to understand the meaning of Mary-Suedom before pointing out that characters are such, but the term Mary Sue shouldn't be thrown out as well. It's reasonable to dislike a character for this reason, but there is a difference between a Mary Sue and an unlikable character.
