USB add-on cards using VIA chipsets are notorious for causing older systems to hang or crash upon boot. Hardware enthusiasts, (myself included) would recommend using either any integrated USB chipset available on-board, or, if USB 2.0 is desired, use a card with an NEC chipset.
USB includes a "legacy mode" that allows for newer devices to be detected by older software.
For a time, Firewire was thought to become the new standard, and quite possibly supersede USB. However, with the advent of faster and faster bus speeds over each USB "generation", it became the opposite, with Firewire being forced into obscurity.
Certain tablets that come with non-bluetooth keyboard cases utilize USB or a USB-like interface to connect to the keyboard.
Though the connectors are physically different, USB 3.0 is fully backwards-compatible with all previous generations.
