Doctor Perseus Reviews: Doctor Who S10E5 "Oxygen" · 5:53pm May 18th, 2017
Hard to believe we're almost halfway through Peter Capaldi's final season. Time sure does fly by. Anyway, let's talk about Oxygen.
First, I'll say that it's nice for us to finally get a proper TARDIS trio episode with Nardole tagging along for the adventure. Aside from the first episode, Nardole's been mostly sidelined this season so far. But I expect his presence to pick up from here on out. I really like the dynamic 12, Bill, and Nardole have and I'm looking forward to seeing their future adventures together. I'm also wondering if Bill and Nardole will go on to meet the Thirteenth Doctor but let's not worry about that for now.
Coming off the heels of last week's creepy Knock Knock, this episode proved to be even more terrifying. The idea of oxygen being sold by the breath and your suits killing you when your survival becomes too expensive is a pretty terrifying idea. It's also sad to think that there are bits of truth to that. I mean, if companies could somehow charge you for the air you breathe, you know they would. Would they go this far? Who knows? But, as the ending suggests, the company responsible does get their comeuppance in the end with a revolt and the end of capitalism (and humanity would then move on to its next mistake but that's a story for another day). I don't want to delve too much into this but I feel this could be seen as the most political episode of the season thus far with all its jabs at capitalism. I don't want to dive into that debate because that's a topic for someone else to tackle. But, thankfully, it's not at the forefront of the episode and the episode is still a terrifying ride regardless.
I'll also say that the twist at the end with the Doctor going blind was rather surprising. Although it is a bit apparent that it was added on at the last moment. It does have me interested about what's going to happen now with the Doctor being blind, how he's going to move about the world, and when he's going to get his eyesight back. Especially with next episode starting off the Monk 3-parter. And I'm sure a certain follower of mine will be very interested in next week's episode since it involves the Vatican and the Pope. Should be quite interesting, indeed.
Anyway, I really liked Oxygen. Now that we've gotten through the first string of adventures, it's time for this season to finally kick into high gears.
What did the rest of you think of Oxygen?
You're talking about me aren't you?
I also found this quite the suspenseful episode. I was also rather surprised by The Doctor going blind, and I wondered at the time where were they going to go from here.
