The tradition of calling the president by the name "Mr. President" was started by George Washington, who disliked the idea of associating the president with high levels of power. (Obviously, since there was the whole "we just defeated the most powerful nation in the world" thing and all, nobody wanted another king.)
Benjamin Franklin was considered for a time to possibly be the president, but due to his age and ongoing illness, he refused.
Before and during the revolution, each state functioned and governed themselves much more like their own nations rather than states, and even minted their own currency.
James Madison is known as the "Father of the Constitution".
For a time, before the constitution was adopted, the Articles of Confederation served as the basis for the US government. It ultimately failed due to it's lack of any method for the government to raise money to run itself.
