Goddamn You Steve Earle · 12:17pm Feb 8th, 2017

My name's Jonagold Applecore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandpa 'Gold round heah
He only came ta Ponyville twice th' year

He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everypony knew that he made moonshine
Celestia's revenuers wanted Granpa Gold
He went up the Everfree with all he had
Afore my time but so I've been told
He never came back down Cockatrice Road

Now Daddy ran th' applejack in a big black dray
Bought it at auction at the earthpone grange
Manehattan Police Department on the side
Just a wash a coat of primer to make it ours
Well him and Uncle Green tore that thing apart
Until they were finished weren't the same dang cart

Oh sheriff came rounnd in the middle of th' night
Heard granny cryin', knew somethin' wasn't right
He was headed down to Dodge Junction w' the weekly load
You could smell the applejack burnin' down Cockatrice Road

I volunteered for the Guard on my Mark-day
They draft the mud ponies first, round hear anyway
I done two tours of duty in tha Griffish Isles
I came home with a brand new plan
I got the seed from the Aramaspi down in Mexicolt

I planted it in a Everfree holler up Cockatrice Road
And now the EIR's got pegasi in the air
The wild storms blowin those foals around
I learnt a thing or two from Gustav donyew know
You better stay away from Cockatrice Road.

All apologies to Steve Earle

Lyric:
Axes flash, broadsword swing,
Shining armour's piercing ring
Horses run with polished shield,
Fight Those Bastards till They Yield
Midnight mare and blood red roan,
Fight to Keep this Land Your Own
Sound the horn and call the cry,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Follow orders as you're told,
Make Their Yellow Blood Run Cold
Fight until you die or drop,
A Force Like Ours is Hard to Stop
Close your mind to stress and pain,
Fight till You're No Longer Sane
Let not one damn cur pass by,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Guard your women and children well,
Send These Bastards Back to Hell
We'll teach them the ways of war,
They Won't Come Here Any More
Use your shield and use your head,
Fight till Every One is Dead
Raise the flag up to the sky,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Dawn has broke, the time has come,
Move Your Feet to a Marching Drum
We'll win the war and pay the toll,
We'll Fight as One in Heart and Soul
Midnight mare and blood red roan,
Fight to Keep this Land Your Own
Sound the horn and call the cry,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

4413963 I'm more fond of Masefield:

Oh yesterday the cutting edge drank thirstily and deep,
The upland outlaws ringed us in and herded us as sheep,
They drove us from the stricken field and bayed us into keep;
But tomorrow
By the living God, we'll try the game again!

Oh yesterday our little troop was ridden through and through,
Our swaying, tattered pennons fled a broken, beaten few,
And all a summer afternoon, they hunted us and slew;
But tomorrow
By the living God, we'll try the game again!

And here upon the turret-top the bale-fires glower red,
The wake-lights burn and drip about our hacked, disfigured dead,
And many a broken heart is here and many a broken head;
But tomorrow
By the living God, we'll try the game again!

I just have no idea how to ponify 'the living God'. All the usual suspects don't scan in the least. Maybe 'Heaven's Sun'? 'Sun and Moon'?

BTW, Cherie got featured on Quill & Blade's 'OC of the Month' art-draw for December, playing Pansy against Q&B's Rossby Waves as Commander Hurricane in the Company's, let's say, idiosyncratic version of the Hearthswarming Pageant. I believe that's Rossby Waves' work there as the artist as well.

Try 'Heavens high'.

I agree that your poem is more appropriate but that is not quite what I was getting at.

What I was thinking about was songs used to affect solders morale, booth your own and the enemies. Just imagine the Company marching out onto the field singing the March of Cambreadth or a similar song. I know line battles are not the usual mode of operation for the Company (in fact they avoid them whenever possible) but the current campaign is looking like they might be forced to do a few. So the Company needs every advantage they can get, sneaky and underhooved or otherwise.

Also Harmony song magic.

4413963 Heh, always did love that song :pinkiehappy:
