An Overview of MLP: Season 6, Part 1 · 2:12am Aug 6th, 2016
Since we're now officially halfway through Season 6, it's time for me to do my mid-season overview. Let's go ahead and get started.
Episodes 1 and 2: The Chrystalling:
This may be an unpopular opinion but I liked this premiere overall. Starlight and Sunburt's subplot was interesting (as was their inner dilemmas), Spike got a lot of good moments, Twilight and the rest of the Mane 6 were enjoyable, and it was nice to see Shining Armor and Cadance again. However, while not bad, the main plot with Flurry Heart was fairly underwhelming and paled in comparison to Starlight's subplot. Score: 8/10
Episode 3: The Gift of the Maud Pie:
An enjoyable episode. The interactions between Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Maud were fun and the sisterly bond between Pinkie and Maud was as likable as always. Though parts of the episode seemed to drag. Score: 8/10
Episode 4: On Your Marks:
This was another enjoyable episode. I liked seeing the show begin to explore what the CMC will do now that they've received their cutie marks and Tender Taps was a likable guest character. But, overall, there's nothing truly noteworthy about this episode. Score: 7.5/10
Episode 5: Gauntlet of Fire:
This episode was a blast and a really great Spike episode. Ember was an awesome new character, it was interesting to get a further look into Equestrian dragon culture, and Twilight and Rarity got some fun moments. Oh and it was sorta fun to see Garble again, I suppose. Score: 9/10
Episode 6: No Second Prances:
This was another episode I really liked. It was great seeing Trixie again, Starlight and Trixie's friendship was enjoyable, and it was nice to see Twilight and Trixie finally find themselves on good terms. Score: 9/10
Episode 7: Newbie Dash:
An enjoyable episode. There were some cringe moments but there were fun moments as well and it was nice to see Rainbow Dash finally become a full-fledged Wonderbolt. Score: 7.5/10
Episode 8: A Hearth's Warming Tale:
This was a very fun and creative musical episode/ponified retelling of A Christmas Carol. Not much else to say. It was just a really enjoyable holiday episode (even if the holiday itself was nowhere near its airing date). Score: 8.5/10
Episode 9: The Saddle Row Review:
This was a very fun episode with a unique storytelling method not seen before on this show. Overall, a funny and entertaining comedy of errors with a nice ending. Score: 8.5/10
Episode 10: Applejack's Day Off:
A somewhat entertaining episode. There are some fun moments but, overall, the episode is incredibly simple (possibly to its detriment) and is pretty forgettable. Score: 5.5/10
Episode 11: Flutter Brutter:
A very fun episode. It was nice to see Fluttershy's family, Zephyr's interactions with the Mane 6 were fun, and the episode had a nice ending. Score: 8.5/10
Episode 12: Spice Up Your Life:
Another fun episode with Rarity and Pinkie Pie. The new characters were likable and the episode had an incredibly satisfying ending. Score: 8.5/10
Episode 13: Stranger Than Fan Fiction:
Yet another fun episode. It was nice seeing Daring Do again, the ponified convention was a lot of fun, and the moral was excellent and incredibly relevant. Score: 8.5/10
So that's my overview of the first half of Season 6. Agree with my thoughts? Disagree with them? What are your thoughts on Season 6 so far?
Yeah, have to agree. Season Six is shaping up to be one of the best seasons yet, with really only one bad episode in Applejack's Day Off.
Using my perhaps overly generous IMDb scores:
The Crystalling - 9/10 to part 1, 10/10 to part 2.
The Gift of the Maud Pie - 9/10
On Your Marks - 9/10
Gauntlet of Fire - 10/10
No Second Prances - 8/10
Newbie Dash - 8/10
A Hearth's Warming Tail - 10/10
The Saddle Row Review - 10/10
Applejack's "Day" Off - 8/10
Flutter Brutter - 9/10
Spice Up Your Life - 9/10
Stranger than Fan-Fiction - 9/10
It should be noted that the lowest I've ever gone for this show is 7/10, to The Mysterious Mare-do-Well and MMMystery on the Friendship Express.
