    Evil/Good and Problems

Evil for for Evil's sake: Stories are often just about the hero, even though alot of the time the villain is the more interesting. I prefer my antagonist with baggage or even better, a different concept of right and wrong. Evil just for evil's sake is just bad writing, and a cheep way to defeat him away is to make him/her see the light. This is why I hate what the elements of Harmony did

    Pyrrhic Victories

(this is a rant and as such it rambles. I am only blogging this so I can remember to think more on it later.)

The Conversion Bureau (according to me)

Portrayal of Human Liberation Front (HLF) as good and evil

It all depends on the universe. Some times HLF are racist, bible-bashing, bigoted, nutjub murderers. In other universes they are the only ones that care or are willing to die to save humanity, even if the fight is futile they will not die quietly even if everyone else is resolved to. The important parts are:

    Common issues with fanfictions!

There are three things about MLP stories that I can't stand: Time Turner being portrayed as the doctor (also common as dirt), Fluttershy using the stare on a sentient being and not getting called on it later, and finally Humans being evil or broken and in need of fixing (This is why I have a low opinion of most Conversion Bureau stories).

Common issues with fanfictions! · 1:02am Sep 8th, 2012

Doctor Whooves: I don't like crossovers even done well, not that I don't enjoy a reference or two. The Doctor is the most OP character ever, he wins even when he shouldn't, his enemies realize this in universe even and can be stopped just at the mention of his name! But bringing him into Equestria serves no purpose except to cater to his fanboys, or to ship him with Ditsy Doo! Do not get me wrong, I have no problem with his Time Turner showing up as a world traveled explorer, just not as an alien or a time traveler or with blatant knowledge of humans beyond a normal pony. Keep away from the overpowered character stallions, they kill the suspense.

The stare on sentients: The most OP power ever, the stare while almost entirely leaves the plot intact, destroys the character's image for good. No matter how awesome and hardcore your OC was before, the moment he is stared by the timid pegasus he loses all creditablity. Anyone seen being mind raped will look pathetic or a victim, but since it was done by fluttershy, no one will treat it like something bad so we have to read how it gets played off as not a big deal. this is something even the show takes more seriously then the fanfics, because while she does use it on the dragon, the stare is considered a weapon by the cast and were appalled at the very thought when the CMC were suddenly well behaved as if they were stared. Plot wise the stare isn't bad, but don't expect your character to be seen as dangerous in anyway once it is used on him.

Humans are in need of fixing: Ok, I get it you like ponies more than humans. That doesn't mean humans are a monster race. I may like ponies but I am proud and loyal to my race first. You may be misanthropic but that doesn't mean you should insult them for no reason, and no turning them all amoral doesn't count unless it's an alternate timeline like Warhammer 40k or a naziverse. Making humans evil just cause you are misanthropic reduces your work to propaganda. Leave propaganda to the politicians. ;)

The Untouchables: Stories that have one character that the author considers untouchable/undefeatable/uncontrollable . This tends to happen with Fluttershy and her staring anything into submission, Pinkie Pie's randomness saving her from anything, or berserk Twilight being so broken that it would be easier to battle Celestia. :trixieshiftleft: If you have a favorite character, this tends to be the one that is broken.

This is why I hate what the elements of Harmony did to Nightmare Moon.

Saw your comment on Silvertie's story and I must say I agree....well mostly. Don't know enough about Dr. Who so I'm rather ambivalent towards that. And yes, the Stare being used as a plot device to trump that pesky thing known as free will pisses me off to no end. Probably why I had her use it on a basilisk in one of my stories. Petty? Me? And the last point......yes. I love ponies, but I'd initiate orbital bombardment of Equestria to save humanity any day of the week. Not too mention ponies are portrayed as being almost as flawed as us so I have no clue where this super nice, superior species bullshit comes from.
