Two New Pokemon Revealed?!?! · 5:07am Jun 11th, 2016
I'm tired, so I'll give you guys a brief rundown!
Nekkoala
On the left, this adorable little thing is a first in the Pokemon world in many, many ways. First of all, it's appearance is that of a Koala Bear, which is about goddamn time if you ask me. It's typing is pure Normal-type, but what really makes this Pokemon interesting is its ability "Definite Sleep", which prevents it from getting any status condition besides sleep. I can think of about 17 different ways this thing can be OP in competitive play, but that's a story for another day, I'm afraid.

On the right, this Pokemon may actually surprise you a bit. Looks like a regular Normal-type, right? Wrong! This is actually a Rock-type Pokemon. Twice now GameFreak has duped a Rock-type Pokemon on us now! But nevertheless, we saw this cutie a while back in the Japanese short trailers, but only now are we getting confirmation of what exactly it is. I think I might make this fella a main-stay for my team when it evolves. Its ability is either Keen Eye or Vital Spirit.

Does the presence of a koala pokemon mean that the region after Olola is going to be modeled after Australia? Let's face facts, the Pokemon games have been working on building towards a massive world where different kinds locations each of distinct pokemon, but with gen 1's Kangaskhan, which is clearly modeled after a kangaroo, and now Nekkoala, which modeled and has the name of the koala in its name, it seems like they're teasing at the idea that one of the next regions could in fact be modeled after Australia. And honestly, I think that would be cool to see. Pokemon modeled after some of Australia's native fauna and flora would be interesting to see since Australia itself is well-known for having some of the most unique creatures on the globe.

Apparently, Definite Sleep does not keep the Pokemon asleep, rather it cannot be affected by any status condition (excluding Confusion, I would assume) other than Sleep. It's still a competitively sound ability though.

I've tried staying away from spoilers regarding new Pokemon but... it seems to me that's impossible now.
4015215 You see what I mean, I honestly don't know why they haven't made Australia a region in the series yet, especially since the Pokemon GO beta testing took place in Australia. And it's not just the native inhabitants of a region that can serve as templates for Pokemon, it's all entities that exist in their lore. Hopefully the followup games to Sun and Moon will be in a region modeled after Australia.

Also regions based on the Continental US, Mexico, Alaska, Russia, Korea, other archipelagoes (Hawaii is an archipelago in case you didn't know), the Britannian Isles, Scandinavia, and much more. There are just so many potential locations to explore through the lens of Pokemon. Something I would like to see, but probably won't happen, is a Pokemon console game that takes a look at your location in the real world and tells you the name of the Pokemon region it would belong too (hopefully with pokemon to match), of course I know the likelihood of that happening is exceedingly low.
