The Lyrics Will Ruin the Song For You · 4:41am Jun 6th, 2016
So I'm driving home from work after a long day and I turn on the radio, and their playing "Push" by Matchbox Twenty, which I haven't heard in ages, and I thought "Hey, this is nice". But then the guy sings the word "baby" and suddenly things start clicking into place, and I realize "holy crap, this song is about domestic abuse!" Some research on Wikipedia confirmed this, although it turned out it was the guy singing the song being abused rather than him abusing his girlfriend. Naturally, listening to the song felt a bit awkward after that.
I'm not saying that I hate the song now, but this wouldn't be the first time figuring out the meaning of a song's lyrics changed my opinion about it. I used to enjoy listening to "Whistle" by Flo Rida until I learned that it was a song about blow jobs. And before that there was "3" by Britany Spears, which I loved until I realized what they were counting; although that one may sound a little hypocritical considering one of the M-rated stories I have in my Favorites bookshelf, but I prefer my sexual content in the written word rather than in song, so there you go.
My point is, the best way to ensure that you never stop loving a song is to never stop and think about its lyrics.
