Just A Fun/Boring Little Story For Y'all. · 11:48am Apr 17th, 2016

So, for those of you who don't know, I've been playing guitar for three years now. I'm still at a pretty basic stage, but I've been improving rapidly as of late. Well, since my favorite type of music is metal by at least twenty leagues, I put most of my focus into playing metal music. A lot of metal from the 80s is great, but I really like a lot of the modern metal stuff: Rap metal, alt metal, metalcore, etc. So when I'm not working on things like chord scales and music theory and whatnot, I have my guitar in drop C, my favorite tuning.

Well, yesterday I went out to get new strings, because mine were old and loose. I'd been hunting for a long time for some heavy-guage strings, so I could keep it in drop C, which is kind of a low tuning, without them getting loose and rattly. So I went with some high-tension Ernie Ball (which I had never used before) strings.

Welp, when they said "heavy-gauge" they meant business, and when I finally put them on my guitar and played them...

Like, holy shit. I'm pretty sure those were for a baritone guitar. I tuned them down to Drop A# and they felt as tight as standard E ought to feel. It's fucking insane. My fingers still hurt a little.

Eventually, they loosened up just a little as they got used to being stretched and I could tune them back up to drop C and play without a hitch, but they're still tighter than E standard on drop C. If they really are baritone string, then I can play baritone without a problem—which is great if one of your favorite non-metal artists is Sungha Jung.
