On Hiatus: The Games We Are Forced to Play

*sigh* I promised myself that I wouldn't let this happen to my story, but I feel wrong having people wait in anticipation for the next chapter to come out for in indefinite amount of time.

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!

*zombie crawl's back into his chair*

    Uuuunnnggghhhhhh, it hurts...

    [What hurts, Kablam?]

    Everything; everything hurts right now.

[Why does it- ; wait, were you out drinking all break again? You know what happens when you do that.]

I wish it was just that. It would have made things a lot simpler.

    [well then, what's wrong?]

    I'm sick. *sniff*

Season 6 Episode 1 & 2 Review · 8:56pm Apr 1st, 2016

What’s up everyone, Kablam here. I’ve finally gotten around to watching the season 6 premiere episodes and I think it’s time I did a little review on them. I went into these episodes blind and not sure what to expect from them; the only clues I had were a few thumbnails about a pink baby pony. Let’s get this started.

So we open up with Starlight Glimmer wandering around the castle looking for Twilight. now, I’m not as vindictive as I was a few months ago when the last time we dealt with her fucking up time lines and wanting to end the world over losing a friend; but it’s understandable that I still want to keep her at arms' length and a gun holstered in my back pocket with the safety off.

But this brings up the point that most of the castle is a blank and bland canvas. It is just begging to have things added to it to create its own little flare! You could have someone set up a Photography booth, a work out room, at least a few laboratories; I know I would add in a room dedicated to automotive technology (mechanic shop) so I could fiddle and tinker with engines as a past time.

So anyways, we have some talk about this crystalling of the new royal family member. Is this like the christening of a ship or something? Are they going to break a bottle over the newborn's head? Okay, maybe a little cruel. But this gives basis for a few other things, like bringing Starlight to reunite with her long lost friend, Sunburst; although she seems more traumatized about the idea than thrilled.

Fast forward to the crystal empire, we break up into two different plot lines. For now, let’s stick with Starlight and Spike and see what’s going on with them. Starlight’s not thrilled about the meeting and is stalling as long as possible. This feels like me trying to stall against meeting a family member, except the feeling of hate is more present then the feeling of dread. But we eventually move on and meet Sunburst.

When I first saw him, he seemed like a nerd who kind of failed to find some social circles outside of his work. Not saying that I am hating on the guy; it’s quite the similar situation to me when I was younger. But I don’t have anything else to make judgements about him, he was just some reserved nice guy without any special or unique features (I don’t feel like his early years are enough to predict how he is as a character). Although, he and Starlight both are reluctant to admitting exactly what's been going on with each other in their lives. Well that's going to be a stalemate for a while; let’s get back to the other party with Twilight.

So now we are about to do the big reveal with the baby. I’m skeptical about the result but I’ll go in with an open mind. Cue attempted murder by cuteness! It wasn't very effective...

But what did catch me off guard was the fact that she is an alicorn! Heh heh, heh, heh, a-hem! My response can be summed up with one word...

I would have laughed myself out of the room if I were actually there. But we have other problems to deal with like an overabundance of magic surges and erratic flying from the baby as well. I’ve said it before I’ll say it again: not my chair, not my problem. However, shining armor needs some serious help, and as a bro, I think a few drinks at the local pub will help calm him down. But it gets even better with the kid! Since every baby loves being with pinkie pie, the new kid has to throw a screaming fit over being separated from her which in turn shatters the one thing that is protecting the entire empire!

No! Bad baby! No candy for you! No, don’t you dare try giving me cute baby face! You’re in deep shit, girl!

On a side note, good job on Celestia and Luna's part to hold off the storm! As much hate as they sometimes get for not being proactive, it’s nice to see them proactive this time and on screen for it instead of in the background. Though, the crowd ponies lose a few points for being too stubborn to not realize that the weather probably wasn’t acting normal. Then again, I’m assuming that they experience seasons in a similar way to us and would have realized that a blizzard in the middle of spring/summer is a bit peculiar.

Back to the episode, Starlight meets back up with Twilight and the gang and gets the run-down by Pinkie Pie which was a really impressive summary, in my opinion. But of course, the baby has to strike again and ruin their chances at fixing things by blasting a hole through the only book known to hold the key; nice going, kid.

But we think Sunburst might be able to help some way, so Starlight runs back to get him. Now here comes the good part; we get them to finally admit to past mistakes and admit to not living up to each other's expectations and I think this is great! We finally get to add some dynamic characterization to both of them. It’s actually quite realistic to what actual adults would do, not sharing important events until pushed to the breaking point or caught off guard.

But the empire is about to be buried again so we have no time to waste! We get back to the castle and come up with a plan to fix the heart which is to complete the ceremony they came to do in the first place. Okay, maybe not the most elaborate plan we could come up with and it feels like a bit of a cop out, but we’ve seen worse… I don’t like running around like chickens with our heads cut off and jumping down any and every rabbit hole we find looking for the answer when the solution was right there in front of us. But in retrospect, their thought process and decisions does make logical sense.

So we fix the crystal heart, save the crystal empire again (this is like, what, the third time?), and fix the baby’s overly active magical tendencies. Not too bad in wrapping up all the loose ends. But then we have Twilight’s parents come onto the scene! That was an eyebrow raiser!

This was really neat seeing Twilight’s parents come on screen. And hearing them speak for the first time was cool, however I’m not sure I like how Twilight’s dad was voiced acted. I was expecting to hear a bit older and wiser sounding voice instead of the slightly bouncy and energetic voice we heard. I don’t know, I still like the version that was portrayed in Past Sins who spoke and acted with careful choices and experience.

But her mom sounded spot on! She had just the right kind of motherly voice that made me think of my own mom with her sweet and caring voice. Although, I think I might have heard someone say that it sounds a lot like Tara Strong voicing her own character’s mom. A bit off putting, but if this is the quality we can expect from mom then I’m okay with it. Just hope we can fix the dad, though.

So final thoughts, not too bad for a season premiere. It’s not a world threatening event and it’s not some evil plot to strip someone of their cutie marks (Starlight, I’m still wary about you). But this definitely opened up quite a few avenues of story lines we can explore! We’ve got Starlight and Sunburst, the royal baby, and Twilight’s parents to name some. I really hope we can explore all these ideas and more in the future; it would be awesome to see more Twilight’s parents! Let’s see what MLP has in store for us with future episodes!

I will see you all in the next chapter!

P.S. if it wasn’t clear enough on my opinion on the new royal baby, here’s another representation of what I think:

Enjoy!
