Well, I'm sure if you've all been paying attention to YouTube lately, there's been a few cases (and by few, I mean the flood gates have opened) where some content creators have had issues with copyright claims. However, these copyright claims often go against the fair use policies. I'm not bringing this up because I'm a victim, but rather, I have a fear of becoming one. Because these issues are not restricted to those who monetize their videos. I once did get a strike on one of my channels. But that was several years ago (as in long before this website would've had any reason to exist), and I can take responsibility for that one. However, I got a strike on my channel even though I wasn't monetizing my videos. I was just making a form of entertainment.
Fast forward to today, and we've got major problems with the way to get strikes on your channel. Copyright claims are being made for more and more ridiculous reason, to having a brand name in the video title to fan-made remixes of existing songs that you use your own voice to sing to people simply not being able to take criticism by someone who's not a Hollywood professional to literally nothing but a flawed automated system. And the fact is that these copyright claims are illegal because they go AGAINST the fair use law! And anyone who does got monetization from YouTube well get screwed because if they get a strike on a video, any money they would get for that video would be going to the one who made the copyright claim. And even if the claim is reversed and you get your monetization back, the one who made the copyright claim get's the keep that money that the creator of the video was supposed to get! By definition, that is theft. YouTube should set up a third part account so that the money from the video can be held. that way, if the decision is reversed, the money can go back the the content creator!
The word has to be spread about this, that YouTube is allowing illegal action to take place. There are people who make YouTube videos AS their source of income. Some of these people have families to support, or simply have to support themselves. So send this along, either by sending this blog post to others for them to see, or making blog posts of your own. Do whatever you can to get the message heard! Fair use is freedom of speech! By not allowing freedom of speech, YouTube is taking away our constitutional right! It's time to put You back in YouTube!
