Tool for writing in the internet age · 10:41am Feb 17th, 2016
Once upon a time I wrote everything on paper, then I'd type it up on Google Docs afterwards. There were pros and cons to this, and I still miss the forced editing and the better sense of pacing I got from doing things that way. But while writing Warmth in the Snow I decided to try experimenting with writing it on Docs in the first place, with the hope that I could increase productivity. As it turns out, I don't think there's a drop in the quality of my writing since then, and my productivity did sky rocket. Sort of.
When inspired I can sit down and write a couple thousand words in a few hours. But most of the time I'm on the right track if I can manage a few hundred words in a night. See, I learned something that deep down I always knew. I'm lazy and easily distracted. Writing on my computer means that Fimfiction, Tumblr, and Cracked (the unholy trinity of distractions for me) are all only a click away. I could keep writing, but what if some one left a comment?
Lately I've been working on a story that's different. And by different I mean 'E' rated. And if you've read anything I've written (and why else would you be here?) you'll know that me and the 'E' rating aren't exactly an obvious match. So it's safe to say I'm a bit out of my comfort zone, and writing's been difficult. I've been working on this story on and off for about a month, and had finally made it to... four hundred words To put that into perspective, this blog post is currently at like 270, and I've been writing it for like five minutes.
Then while browsing Tumblr, I stumbled across a program called Writer's Block. You launch the program, give it a goal (either how many words or how many minutes you want to write for) and it won't close until that time is up. Alt tab, ctrl alt delete, windows key, nothing gets rid of the damn thing. I know, I tried. I set it to five hundred words, and so help me I typed them. Couldn't do much else. Did more than that, actually, since I didn't notice when I was able to leave. Once I broke away from the distractions it was much easier to keep that mindset. Then I accidentally set it for ten more minutes (I thought that option would minimize the program for ten minutes), so I wrote some more. Now I'm 1,220 words in, triple where I was an hour ago.
You can download Writer's Block here. It's free. There's a premium version available, if any of those features interest you. It seems the website no longer exists, but I'll email it to anyone who wants it. Just PM me with your email address.
On a not entirely unrelated note, I haven't been able to work on Finding Home, since I've been struggling so much with this story. But now that it seems I'll actually be able to get the damn thing written, I should be back to working on FH next week And oh man, act three is gonna be crazy, y'all.
That sounds like a really neat program!

So long as you don't need internet, I don't see why not You're still on your own with your phone though
And now I don't feel special anymore.
My thoughts of this evening, while I was writing my post.
I'll try to download the program and see if it helps. It's actually a good try. Thanks for sharing this.
Um, I tried to go on the website and it doesn't work.

Well damn, you're right
Tried googling it, couldn't find it that either. The company might've stopped supporting the program. No matter, if you PM me your email address I can email the program to you.
