Season 5 has an Overarching Theme -- and it's not Cutie Mark Magic · 2:11am Nov 29th, 2015
Warning. This post is all over the place.
And with the finale, Season 5 comes to a close, and the hiatus begins today. But how did Season 5 stack up in comparison to the others, and why do I like it so much? Who wants to see Emerald talk to herself because no-pony reads these, but she likes posting them anyway? In short:
5 < 2 < 4 < 3 <1
In long? Well, here I go.
Season Five had plenty of gem episodes such as The Cutie Map, Cutie Re-Mark, Make New Friends, Slice of Life, Amending Fences, Crusaders of the Lost Mark and The Mane Attraction. My Little Pony has always known that to make a good season, they need spectacular episodes. But for this, it was even more than that.
We have a huge overarching theme, and it's not Cutie Mark Magic. It's about moving on.
You may think, "nah, that's stupid. Only like five episodes were about that." But really, try to name an episode in Season 5 that isn't about moving on. There's only a few that don't immediately fit the description, and even then I can think of easy ways to put them in.
If you don't want to see me list off so many eps, you can skip this part.
The Cutie Map? Townsfolk lived lives in equality, learned that cutie marks weren't bad and moved on. Castle Sweet Castle? Twilight moved on from the old library. Bloom and Gloom? Applebloom learned to move on from her fears of her cutie mark. Tanks for The Memories? Rainbow moved on from mourning over Tank. Appaloosas Most Wanted? Troubleshoes moved on from his sad life and became a clown instead. Make New Friends? Discord learned to move on from his jealousy. Do I need to continue?
No other season has done something quite like this, and no other season put so much thought into the storyline as Season 5 did. The highs were higher, the lows were few in-between, and I felt like the writers really cared about this season. They put extra effort to put Starlight in the background, they made the CMC's marks unexpected, they did things we never thought would happen.
This is my favorite season.
