I can only imagine this is a result of the Smash Ballot, as Sakurai said any further characters would be Smash Ballot fanservice. Doesn't surprise me that Cloud would be a notable contender, as Final Fantasy is a huge IP with a large install base, to say nothing of the seventh game in the series.
But Cloud's definitely not the only addition to result from the Ballot, so we'll just have to wait and see who else made the cut next month.

Ok, so, basically what this means is that Sakurai is actually listening to the hordes of idiotic twelve-year-olds. Probably the only reason Cloud got put in was because Shrek, Goku, and SpongeBob aren't actually videogame characters. Another thing is that FFVII has never actually even been on a Nintendo console, and there are hundreds of 1st party fighters that could have been added instead. Finally, looking at the trailer, he's literally just an Ike clone, but with the energy wave projectile that Ike should have had in his moveset since Brawl, as that was how he fought at range ingame.
3538458 Twelve year olds did not vote for this, I guarantee you. I'm still in highschool myself and have a twelve year old brother, almost no one at that age plays Final Fantasy. They play Pokemon, Call of Duty, and Fifa.
